Lisa Seidlitz presents: "CH stands for cheese, right? A SOTL study of a Swiss culture class"
Culture has always been a part of foreign language learning. However, in recent years, more and more language professors advocate placing culture at the center of our classes. The question of just how to teach culture remains a topic of much debate. This presentation describes the reworking of a traditional German grammar and reading course into a class that integrates grammar, literature, and cultural presentations in order to teach students explicitly about Switzerland. The reworked course includes assessment of student learning through pre- and post-tests of factual knowledge of and attitudes toward Switzerland. Mixed results raise questions about how to further restructure the course.
Dara Wegman-Geedey presents: "Authentic Learning: Clinic-based SIs for optometry and nursing students"
The biology major was revamped about 5 years ago to include three SI options: off-campus research (e.g., TMC summer research), research under a faculty member's guidance, or a literature-based research project as part of a small class focused on one topic. One of the projects Dara tackled during sabbatical was the development of focused SI experiences (including reflective assignments and assessments) for some of Augustana's specialized advising programs, namely our 3:4 optometry program with Illinois College of Optometry and the BA/BSN Dual Degree program that we have with Trinity College of Nursing & Health Sciences. Each program holds unique opportunities and special challenges, but the clinic-based SI for each program is shaped to help students bridge the biological literature and inquiry process with the literature and practices unique to their profession. Dara will also give a preview of the first nursing and the first optometry SIs for Augustana students: each is currently a work in progress.

Have you ever wondered how to effectively teach a class that has one student of color? Do you feel unsure about addressing issues of diversity in your classroom? Have you thought about how it would feel if no one else in the classroom looked like you?
This session, Diversity in the Classroom, is designed for faculty at Augustana. As a community we are striving for a more diverse student body. The goal of this session is to develop our own (faculty) awareness of diversity issues/perspectives within our classes. What are the best ways to help students feel comfortable in our classes, especially when they are one of only a few non-majority students in the room? We want to discuss strategies and provide practical tips that we all can use to work with a more diverse classroom, whether that be a class in Chemistry, or Literature, or Music, or.... We ask that each of you bring a textbook or text that you use in one of your courses. We will use these texts during one of the activities for the session. Hope to see you there!
In addition to the session, you may wish to look at a collection of resources addressing Diversity in the Classroom put together by the Professional and Organizational (POD) Network in Higher Education.

NOMINATIONS FOR STUDENT ALUMNI COUNCIL AND
STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES TO THE ALUMNI BOARD
Again this year we would appreciate your assistance and advice in identifying outstanding students to serve on the Student Alumni Council and as student representatives on our Alumni Association Board of Directors. Your input in years past has been critically important and greatly appreciated. Please reflect on those First Year students with whom you have become acquainted and consider nominating them for Council involvement and Board service. Members of the Student Alumni Council and student representatives to the board take on the role of bringing current students' experiences to Board discussions as well as assisting to educate students about the many ways alumni support our college. Student representatives carry full membership on the Board and participate with Alumni Board members to serve the college throughout their student years at Augustana. A first-year student begins their association in the fall of their sophomore year and serves for three years.
We are looking for students who:
• have developed a love for Augustana College and who display school spirit;
• have demonstrated leadership qualities;
• are creative;
• are outgoing and enthusiastic;
• have a strong work ethic;
• will be committed to the work of the Board and to attendance at Board meetings and functions.

I HEART AUGUSTANA!
In honor of Heart Month, Augustana's Wellness Team is proud to announce a series of heart- related programs in partnership with Trinity Regional Health Systems. Learn about your heart, and get a doctor's view of real hearts in our cadaver lab on Thursday, February 2, by attending one of three identical 30-minute sessions at 11:30 a.m., 12 noon and 12:30 p.m. Each session starts in the Hanson Hall of Science, Room 109. (Please note: Visiting the cadaver lab is optional.)
These lunch-and-learn sessions are being led by faculty member Dr. Darrin Good and local physician Dr. Nate Fierce '00 in partnership with Trinity's HeartAware program. After a short presentation on the importance of heart health, you can choose to step into the cadaver lab to compare a healthy heart with a diseased heart, or you can use one of the computers that will be available for taking the HeartAware screening on the spot!
Trinity's HeartAware program is a free, anonymous, online heart screening. It takes 7 minutes to complete, and any participants who show signs of risk will receive a variety of voluntary assistance, including a coupon for a free cholesterol screening and a follow up visit with a Trinity HeartAware nurse.
This event kicks off a month of heart-related programming planned by Augustana's Wellness Team in partnership with Trinity. Throughout the month of February, you can take part in programs and events targeted at heart health, identifying potential warning signs of heart-related issues and living a healthier lifestyle. In addition to February 2, mark your calendar for these HeartAware events too:

Trinity representatives will be on campus to discuss the HeartAware program, to answer questions and to assist anyone interested in taking the on line screening.

INTERNATIONAL FOOD FESTIVAL COOKBOOK FOR SALE
"The Tasteful Table: Celebrating the Global Community at Augustana College" is now on sale, in celebration of the 10th year for the International Food Festival (IFF).
The cookbook includes dishes from the IFF as well as new recipes from Augustana faculty, staff, food services and from Augustana's international students. More than 60 people contributed to the book. It has 128 pages and includes more than 250 recipes.
Cookbooks are $10 each and proceeds support Augustana's community of international students.
Books are available at the International and Off-Campus Programs office in Sorenson Hall. Checks and cash are accepted.
CIEE INTERNATIONAL FACULTY DEVELOPMENT SEMINARS
For those who may be interested in the two-week international development seminars from CIEE as well as the $3,000 grant from the International & Off-Campus Programs (IOP) office to three faculty participants, click HERE for information on the seminars, the grants from the IOP office and from CIEE as well, and some criteria used when vetting applications for the IOP grants. At the bottom of the sheet is a list of past recipients. Please feel free to contact them to get the story of their two-week program.
There are 18 different programs this year, including a new one not in the brochure (but available online) in Cuba.
Applications for the seminars are due to CIEE in March, but applications for the IOP office's $3,000 grants are due February 6, 2012.

Born in London in 1812 to a father who impoverished the family, Charles Dickens went on to write 15 novels and many short stories and other writings, and is considered to be one of the greatest writers of English literature. The current display in the library features several first editions of Dickens's works. Our copy of Little Dorrit, for example, is open to the cover of one of the serial parts in which the books were first issued. The parts were later bound. In addition to his famous works such as Bleak House and Oliver Twist, Dickens also produced five Christmas books, beginning with A Christmas Carol, published in 1843. Our copies of these books are in the original cloth bindings. Join the birthday party on Tuesday, February 7 at 4:00: Cake and punch, and exhibit of books from Special Collections.
EXPLORING ECONOMIC INEQUALITY: WHITE PRIVILEGE SUMMIT 2012
CALL FOR PROPOSALS
The 2012 White Privilege Summit Core Committee is requesting program proposals for this year's theme, Exploring Economic Inequality. The Summit provides an opportunity for critical discussions about diversity, multicultural education and leadership, social justice, race, gender, class, sexual orientation, environment, health, religion and systems of privilege and oppression. Members of the core committee chose this theme in an effort to broaden the scope of this year's Summit. By offering a series of facilitated workshops designed to offer a wide range of perspectives, the committee hopes to create a challenging learning experience for all participants. Your voice is critical to the workshop's success.
The 2012 Summit will take place on Thursday, March 22, 2012. We invite you to submit a concurrent session proposal utilizing this speaker form. Program proposals and/or questions should be emailed t Ken Brill by Friday, February 17th.

NEW EXHIBIT IN SPECIAL COLLECTIONS
"Worth A Thousand Words: Nineteenth Century British Illustrated Books"
For many years, books for people of all ages included illustrations along with the text. Such images are often unfamiliar to most of today's readers because, whether for scholarly or economic reasons, most of these books are printed today without the illustrations that originally accompanied them. This is unfortunate because many of these illustrations are great works of art and illuminate their accompanying text. The nineteenth century in Britain was a golden era for book illustration, producing some of the most important and beautiful illustrated books ever made. This exhibit is a wonderful opportunity to see text and image together. It features illustrated editions of works by authors such as Charles Dickens and Jane Austen, and illustrators including Thomas Rowlandson, George Cruikshank, and Walter Crane.
