2012 Season - Rindone sets school record in 300
|Junior Alex Rindone was a double winner at the Midwest Invitational on Saturday, January 21, taking the 60 in :07.09 and breaking his own school record in winning the 300 in :35.07.|
MONMOUTH, Illinois - It might only be the second weekend of the 2012 men's track & field indoor season but Augustana appears to be in mid-season form. The Vikings won 11 events at the Midwest Invitational on Saturday, January 21 and junior Alex Rindone (Marmion Academy, Geneva, Ill.) broke one of his own school records.
Rindone won a pair of events on Saturday, taking the 60 in :07.09 and shattering his own school record with an impressive victory in :35.07 in the 300. His old mark was :35.74 set a year ago at this same meet. Not only did Rindone break the school record but freshman David Voland (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) was also under Rindone's old mark as he took second in :35.24. Voland was also third in the 60 hurdles in :08.69.
Junior Justin Smith (Fenton HS, Bensenville, Ill.) was the other double winner for veteran head coach Paul Olsen's team. He took the 800 in 2:02.03 and the mile in 4:18.96. It was a day for the Smiths as Justin's twin brother Nathan Smith (Fenton HS, Bensenville, Ill.) won the 5000 in 15:37.22 and junior Jonathan Smith (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) - no relation - won the 3000 in 9:01.26.
Senior Greg Davis (Carlinville HS, Carlinville, Ill.) won the 60 hurdles in :08.54 and then handled the leadoff leg on the victorious 1600 relay team that clocked a time of 3:24.62. He was also third in the 300 at :36.86. Joining Davis was sophomore Chris Madison (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.), sophomore Steve Zahrobsky (Downers Grove South HS, Woodridge, Ill.) and Voland. Madison won the 600 in a time of 1:23.83 and Zahrobsky was third in the same race at 1:25.39.
Freshman Josh Prosser (Eureka HS, Goodfield, Ill.) won the high jump with a clearance of 6' 3 ½" and senior Brian Benning (Winnebago HS, Winnebago, Ill.) took the weight throw with a toss of 57' 0 ¼". He was also second in the shot put with a mark of 46' 11 ½".
The 800 relay team of sophomore Jay Graffagna (Geneva HS, LaFox, Ill.), freshman Nowlan Savage (Arapahoe HS, Highlands Ranch, Colo.), freshman Brandon Jasper (DeWitt Central HS, DeWitt, Iowa) and junior Floyd Mays (Mooseheart HS, Justice, Ill.) placed second in 1:32.20. Mays finished second in the 60 with a time of :07.19 and was third in the 200 in :23.42.
Freshman Jeff Padesky (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) took second in the pole vault with a clearance of 14' 7 ¼". Sophomore Edgar Valle (Kaneland HS, Elburn, Ill.) was second in the 600 in 1:24.98. Senior Adam Myers (Dixon HS, Dixon, Ill.) tossed the 35 pound weight 52' 11" to take second. In the pole vault junior Colton VanKirk (Rochelle HS, Rochelle, Ill.) was third at 14' 1 ¼" and junior Ethan Gale (Oregon HS, Oregon, Ill.) placed fifth with a height of 13' 1 ½'.
Junior Brian Pollastrini (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) finished second in the mile in 4:25.48 and third in the 800 in 2:04.64. Sophomore Matt Dickey (Benet Academy, Downers Grove, Ill.) finished third in the 400 (:52.44) and junior Dan Halleck (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) was fourth (:58.00). Sophomore Tyler Busch (Winnebago HS, Winnebago, Ill.) placed third in the mile in 4:31.79.
Freshman Keith Cline (Byron HS, Byron, Ill.) sprinted to fourth place in the 60 in :07.21. Freshman Andrew Brimeyer (Dubuque Senior HS, Dubuque, Iowa) placed fourth in the 5000 in 16:19.64 and sophomore Mitch Dietrich (Quincy Notre Dame HS, Quincy, Ill.) was fifth in 16:37.66. Freshman Vincenzo Dal Pozzo (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) was fourth in the 600 with a time of 1:27.16. Sophomore Szymon Ligas (St. Bede Academy, Spring Valley, Ill.) finished fourth in the 800 in 2:05.85. Freshman Grant Bell (Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa HS, Belgrade, Minn.) finished fourth in the 3000 (9:20.14). Junior Kevin Macek (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) was fourth in the shot put (45' 4 ½") and sophomore Nick Sinon (Kaneland HS, Elburn, Ill.) placed fourth in the high jump (5' 11 ½").
The distance medley team of senior Pat Manser (St. Charles North HS, Elburn, Ill.), freshman Alec Seymour (Riverton HS, Riverton, Ill.), sophomore Payton Campbell (Normal Community HS, Bloomington, Ill.) and senior Thomas Christian (Port Angeles HS, Port Angeles, Wash.) took fourth in 11:13.18.
Freshman Alex Odenkirk (Ironwood Ridge HS, Tucson, Ariz.) was fourth in the mile at 4:37.44 and sophomore Jared Spivey (Annawan HS, Annawan, Ill.).
Augustana will be back in action on Saturday, January 28 at the Wartburg Invitational in Waverly, Iowa.
