2011-12 Season - Vikings win every event in win over Coe

Ryan Chaney won 100 breaststroke in 1:08.30 as Augustana won all 13 events in a 183-30 win over Coe on Friday, January 13 in the Carver Pool.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - A layoff from competition that was over a month long certainly didn't hamper the performance of the Augustana men's swimming & diving team on Friday, January 13 in the Carver Center. The Vikings of head coach Scott Johannsen were very impressive in defeating Coe 183-30 in a dual meet.

Augustana won each of the 13 events contested on the evening. Of the nine individual swimming events in the Carver Pool, the Vikings scored one-two-three sweeps in all but one. The lone event that did not feature Augustana winning the top three places was the 50 freestyle where the Blue & Gold still managed to take first and second.

Freshman Aaron Holt (Mt. Vernon HS, Mt. Vernon, Ill.) was the biggest winner on the night, winning three individual events. He won the 200 individual medley in 2:00.11, the 100 butterfly in :55.41 and 100 backstroke in :57.50.

Besides Holt, Augustana also got individual double victories from senior Charles Vogt (Oak-Park River Forest HS, Oak Park, Ill.) and freshman Josh Wielenga (School of Environmental Study, Apple Valley, Minn.).

Vogt took first in the 50 freestyle (:23.08) and 100 freestyle (:50.71). For good measure he added a victory in the 200 freestyle relay when he swam the leadoff leg on a team that clocked 1:31.44. He was joined on that unit by freshman Michael Duy (Marmion Academy, Aurora, Ill.), junior Chris Greaves (Morris HS, Morris, Ill.) and sophomore Daniel Hinck (Harlem HS, Loves Park, Ill.).

Wielenga claimed victories in the one meter diving (196.58 points) and the three meter diving (182.03).

Hinck won the 1000 freestyle in 10:38.29 and took second in the 100 backstroke in 1:03.69. Greaves won the 500 freestyle in 5:04.54 and handled the leadoff leg on the 200 medley relay that stopped the timer in a winning time of 1:49.44. Joining Greaves on the 200 medley relay was sophomore Jasen Hengst (Bettendorf HS, Bettendorf, Iowa), sophomore Austin Zarbuck (Urbana HS, Urbana, Ill.) and freshman Timothy Michaels (Pella Community HS, Pella, Iowa).

Zarbuck won the 200 freestyle (1:52.82) and was second in the 100 freestyle (2:15.73). Sophomore Ryan Chaney (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) won the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.30 and was third in the 1000 freestyle in 12:12.80.

Duy placed second in both the 1000 freestyle (11:04.60) and the 100 butterfly (:58.14). Hengst took second in the 200 individual medley (2:15.73) and the 100 breaststroke (1:08.86). Michaels placed third in the 200 freestyle (2:06.91) and the 100 breaststroke (1:15.79).

Senior Denny Wind (Downers Grove North HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) finished second in the 50 freestyle in :25.12 and the 500 freestyle in 5:35.96 and added a third in the 100 freestyle in :55.43. Freshman Alex Putz (Oak Forest HS, Oak Forest, Ill.) placed second in the 200 freestyle (2:05.06) and third in the 100 butterfly (1:02.26) and the 500 freestyle (5:42.02). Senior Joey Waldorf (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) was third in the 100 butterfly in 1:02.26 and the 100 backstroke in 1:07.67.

Augustana moved to 2-1 in dual meets this year and will compete against Luther on Saturday, January 14 in Decorah, Iowa.
