2011-12 Season - Vikings now fourth in NCAA Division III poll

After a week in the top spot, the Augustana men’s basketball team fell three places to fourth in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25. The Vikings opened the year with three straight wins to ascend to number one and won their first two games as the top-ranked team before suffering their first loss Saturday at Washington University. They bounced back with a 72-50 home win Tuesday night, December 6 over Fontbonne to improve to 6-1 on the year.
Middlebury (5-0) is the new number one, garnering 13 of 25 first-place votes and 612 total points. Another New England Small College Athletic Conference team, Amherst (6-0), checks in at number two, getting 10 first-place votes and 599 points. Preseason number one Virginia Wesleyan (5-1), with one first-place nod and 506 points, edged out Augustana for the third spot by just two points. Wooster (5-0) is fifth, followed by Whitworth (6-0), who got the remaining first-place vote. MIT (8-0) is seventh with another NESCAC team, Williams (6-1), eighth. Emory (8-0) and Marietta (4-1) round out the top ten.
College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin member Wheaton (6-1) also suffered its first loss this past weekend and fell four spots to 17th.
The fourth-ranked Vikings are next in action on Saturday, December 10 when the 21st-ranked Pointers of Wisconsin-Stevens Point—NCAA Division III national champions in 2004, 2005 and 2010—visit Carver Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
