WINNECONNE, Wis. - Augustana senior Mike Tisza (Hersey HS, Prospect Heights, Ill.) wrapped up the cross country portion of his career by placing 110th in the NCAA Division III national cross country meet on Saturday, November 19. The national meet was hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh at Lake Breeze Golf Club in Winneconne, Wisconsin.
Tisza, who qualified for the national meet by placing 15th in the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional last Saturday at Saukie Golf Course in Rock Island, Illinois, covered the 8000 meter course in 25:21.52. He was trying to duplicate Matt Bowman's All-Amerrican performance of a year ago but he was 34 seconds behind the final All-American spot. That was claimed by Bryan Marsh of Wesleyan with a time of 24:47.02 in 35th place.
Tisza ran his first mile in 4:53 and was in 111th place. He passed the two mile mark in 10:09 and climbed into 97th. That was as high as he would get however, as he slipped into 115th at the four mile mark before finishing with a 5:00 mile to claim 110th.
The Augustana team, which placed seventh in the Midwest Regional a week ago, two places from nabbing the fifth, and final, team qualifying spot, ended the season ranked 25th in NCAA Division III. That means the Vikings were ranked ahead of seven teams that participated in the NCAA Division III national meet as a total of 32 made up the championship field.
