LUNCHBYTES WORKSHOP: RefWorks with pizza!

Recently RefWorks has changed their interface. So for all who have never used RefWorks or want to save time learning its new features, this is the lunch and learn for you. As part of her internship experience to receive her MLS degree, Tredway Library intern Jeraca Fite will be leading this RefWorks workshop to help faculty and librarians.
Jeraca will also demonstrate accessing RefWorks' Write-N-Cite feature. If you have Word 2010 on your laptop, bring it to the workshop and Jeraca will assist you in installing and using Write-N-Cite.

Nineteenth century French sculptor Camille Claudel was Auguste Rodin's student, model, lover, and collaborator, but her work failed to gain the recognition Rodin's did. Despite her immense skill, she was a woman. She spent the last three decades of her life in an asylum. This talk argues that the multi-genre approach of literary collage is particularly well suited to better understanding subjects that resist easy conclusion-here, the iconic, enigmatic Claudel-by discussing Erin Bertram's recently-completed manuscript The Vanishing of Camille Claudel.

Tom Rassieur leads The Minneapolis Institute of Arts Department of Prints and Drawings, a collection of some 40,000 prints and drawings, and is one of the world's experts on Rembrandt prints. In a world too often convinced of the inevitable clash of civilizations, how do we lead our communities of faith to work with people from different religious and philosophical backgrounds and serve the common good? From Martin Luther King, Jr. to Mahatma Gandhi, Dorothy Day to Abraham Joshua Heschel, the answer is clear: interfaith leadership.
Named by US News & World Report as one of America's Best Leaders of 2009, Eboo Patel is the Founder and President of Interfaith Youth Core (IFYC), a Chicago-based organization building the global interfaith youth movement. Author of the award-winning book Acts of Faith: The Story of an American Muslim, the Struggle for the Soul of a Generation, Eboo is also a regular contributor to the Washington Post, USA Today and CNN. He served on President Obama's inaugural Advisory Council for the White House Office of Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships. Eboo Patel holds a doctorate in the sociology of religion from Oxford University, where he studied on a Rhodes scholarship.

Ever wonder how you could help these students be recognized? ... and help them develop the knowledge and skill they'll need to succeed after graduation?
The Office of Academic Affairs has begun to ask these questions. And we are hoping you will be involved in the conversations about how we might do a better job of promoting and developing our top students, especially with respect to nationally competitive student awards.
One of the programs we would like to highlight are the Fulbright Awards. To help us think about this, we have invited Dr. Terry Sparkes of Luther College to join us for some conversation about promoting student success. Luther had ten applicants and four winners this year! Please join us if you have an interest in working with students on nationally competitive awards... especially the Fulbrights. NEW EXHIBIT IN SPECIAL COLLECTIONS
"Worth A Thousand Words: Nineteenth Century British Illustrated Books"
For many years, books for people of all ages included illustrations along with the text. Such images are often unfamiliar to most of today's readers because, whether for scholarly or economic reasons, most of these books are printed today without the illustrations that originally accompanied them. This is unfortunate because many of these illustrations are great works of art and illuminate their accompanying text. The nineteenth century in Britain was a golden era for book illustration, producing some of the most important and beautiful illustrated books ever made. This exhibit is a wonderful opportunity to see text and image together. It features illustrated editions of works by authors such as Charles Dickens and Jane Austen, and illustrators including Thomas Rowlandson, George Cruikshank, and Walter Crane.
Presidential Research Fellowship
Eligibility: All tenure-track and tenured faculty
Deadline: December 15
Notification: January 15; funding disbursed July and August
Description
Presidential Research Fellowships are intended to support faculty research, scholarship and artistic work at Augustana. The fellowships will pay up to $4,000 for a faculty research project to be undertaken in the summer. Up to $750 is available for travel and expenses. The proposal should constitute a new area of research, a new area of an existing research agenda, or support for substantial, ongoing work. Proposals are invited in any of the four areas of scholarship: discovery, teaching, integration and application (outlined by Ernest Boyer in Scholarship Reconsidered) as well as in artistic work. Proposals are competitive and will be reviewed and ranked by an off-campus evaluator. Priority will be given to faculty who were not awarded a Presidential Research Fellowships in the previous year. Faculty members who have summer research funding as part of their contracts in a given year are not eligible for Presidential Research Fellowships in that year. PRF funds are available only to tenured and tenure-track faculty.

TEACHING AND LEARNING EXPERIENCES
Pilot proposals due in Dean's Office: January 16, 2012
Faculty or teams intending to apply, notify Dean Lawrence by December 19, 2011
The Academic Affairs Office welcomes proposals from faculty to design and implement innovative, enhanced teaching and learning environments for our students. What we mean by this are those teaching and learning environments that help students put their knowledge in context, apply what they've learned, and/or engage the community in providing a service or developing local knowledge. Projects may be proposed by a single faculty member or a team of faculty members. We invite you to imagine the possibilities and to talk with colleagues about creating a learning experience for students that will engage them and you in an integrated, interdisciplinary, and project-oriented experience. We hope to offer two new opportunities for students each year.
This call for proposals stems from the faculty's recent success in developing two immersion terms as part of our ongoing work with the MALLA consortium and the Teagle Foundation.[1] While our grant work will be completed in 2012, we want to continue to encourage faculty to think about new ways to engage our students.
Faculty participants will be expected to devote their summer to planning their experiences, and will be paid a $1500 stipend for that work. Experiences should be targeted to first years, sophomores, and/or juniors, and should fulfill several requirements, e.g., major courses and/or general education credit. Once approved by the Academic Affairs office, proposals will proceed through the normal channels of faculty governance. We will work with departments and programs on issues of logistics and program needs.
Pilot proposals are due in the Dean's Office by January 16, 2012. We also ask that faculty or teams intending to apply notify the Dean in writing of their intention to submit a proposal by December 19, 2011.

[1] As part of the Teagle grant, two faculty teams from Augustana developed two 12-credit, interdisciplinary immersion term courses: Hydrobiology (Kevin Geedey and Reuben Heine) and Neurophilosophy (Ian Harrington and Heidi Storl). Each immersion term was taught by two faculty members from two different departments for a trimester, and included student research, field trips, on-campus speakers, and on-site experiential learning opportunities. The courses were offered in Fall 2010-11 and again in 2011-12. You can read more about the immersion terms here.
Summer Research Fellowships
Application Deadline: January 20, 2012
Augustana Student Summer Research Fellowships will again be available for the summer of 2012. These fellowships include a summer stipend plus expenses for a student to do some type of original research under the direction of a faculty member. These awards include a stipend of up to $3,000 plus expenses. PROPOSING AN OFF-CAMPUS OR INTERNATIONAL PROGRAM?
The deadline for any program proposal for a study abroad program or domestic off-campus study program for the 2013-2014 academic year has been moved from December 16th until January 9th to allow faculty the Winter break to finalize their proposals. Program proposals can be for any of the following:
1. A term or half-term (domestic or international ) program using a team of Augustana faculty or a combination of Augustana faculty and 3rd party providers. (ex. East Asia, Holden, Brazil )
2. A summer language immersion or other program type (domestic or international) (ex. Spanish in the Andes, Rocky Mountain Geology, Lit & Music in Paris)
3. An on-campus course which includes a travel component during Fall, Winter or Spring Break or in early summer. (ex. Religion in Rome, Classics in Greece, etc.)
4. A for-credit program fully contained within a term break (ex. Nicaragua Spring Break programs of recent years.)
If you are interested in leading a program in 2013-2014, please schedule a meeting with Allen Bertsche in the next few weeks so he can assist you with the proposal process.
If you have lead a program and wish to repeat it, the same basic principles apply as with new programs, save that you can focus your proposal on the new or altered components of the original program.. If you are planning to lead a program that is running this year or has run any prior year, you must reapply with a proposal. Only programs which are offered each academic year do not need to reapply if they wish to run in 2013-2014.

Again this year Augustana College will participate in the Midwest Faculty Seminars sponsored by the University of Chicago. January 19-21, 2012
Participants of Invisible Man will be attending the world premier stage production of the very first authorized stage adaptation of Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man at the University of Chicago's Court Theater. The work was adapted by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Oren Jacoby, who will be speaking at the conference alongside John Callahan, literary executor of the Ellison estate. Performances will be held Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The Midwest Faculty Seminar hopes to attend as a group on Friday night, January 20. Tickets are paid at the box office and are between $25 and $40. Participants will be contacted if a group rate has been secured. Midwest Faculty Seminar will continue to add participants to the seminar until January 5, 2012, but they cannot guarantee theatre tickets after the December 20, 2011 registration deadline date.
