Admissions Counselor

Status:  Exempt   Full-time  12 month

Reports To:  Dean of Admissions

Overview:  The Admissions Counselor supports Augustana College and the Admissions Office in the recruitment, admissions, and retention goals of the institution. As a member of the admissions department team, works collaboratively with college faculty, administrators, and staff to effectively communicate with prospective students and their families about recruitment process and the value of an Augustana education.  Participates in a wide variety of recruitment activities both on and off campus with a focus on a assigned geographic territories.

Job Duties:

  1. Coordinates and is responsible for recruitment efforts in assigned territories.  Represent the College both on and off campus to prospective students, parents, secondary school counselors and other individuals and/or organizations involved in the college search and selection process.
  2. Plans and implements recruitment and communications activities for schools in assigned territory and represent Augustana at college day/night programs and high school visits.  
  3. Conducts student interviews and information sessions, on and off campus, to communicate distinctions of the college and to assess interest and academic potential.
  4. Communicates with students, families and other college-choice influencers about the admissions process and opportunities at the college.  
  5. Represents Augustana for speeches, speaking engagements, conferences and meetings as assigned. 
  6. Participates in informal recruitment activities such as sporting events, musical performances, plays and other activities.
  7. Reviews student applications and essays, makes admissions decisions and communicates with students and parents on admission status.
  8. Supports the Financial Assistance Office by providing accurate information about the options and resources for funding an education at the college.
  9. Collaborates with recruitment partners (coaches, faculty, fine arts department, etc.) to coordinate efforts.  Works with the Admissions staff on a variety of departmental projects and actively participate in group meetings. 
  10. Creates reports and document activities following departmental procedures in a timely basis including regular progress updates.
  11. Other duties as assigned

Education & Experience:  Bachelor’s degree with one or more years of admissions counseling and/or outreach experience or equivalent. 

Skills & Abilities:  

  • Excellent communication skills including written communication and public speaking skills
  • Ability to develop rapport with a wide variety of student and family personalities.  Strong cross-cultural and interpersonal communication skills are necessary.
  • Commitment and ability to effectively communicate the value of the Augustana experience.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and work with limited supervision.
  • Good decision making and prioritization skills.
  • Ability to effectively supervise student staff.
  • Basic computer skills are required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to represent the Augustana admissions team positively through a strong, student centered focus.

Travel Requirements:  This position involves frequent travel as well as frequent weekend and evening work.

Physical Requirements:  Must be able to lift 40 pounds on a frequent basis.  Ability to travel to remote locations and to load and transport admissions materials, displays and other equipment.   Also required is the ability to listen, hear, speak, read, write, climb stairs, bend, stoop, and stand for intermittently long periods of time.  Must possess finger and hand dexterity for using small tools and equipment.  Must be able to use a computer to accomplish a variety of job tasks.
