2011 Season - Augustana-Illinois Wesleyan Preview

Augustana will wrap up the 2011 season Saturday, traveling to Bloomington, Illinois to take on Illinois Wesleyan in a 1:00 p.m. contest.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Augustana suffered a tough Senior Day loss this past Saturday, falling 28-27 to Elmhurst when its two-point conversion attempt with 41 seconds left was unsuccessful. The Vikings are now 2-7 overall and tied for fifth in the CCIW at 2-4. They wrap up the 2011 season with a road date at Illinois Wesleyan this Saturday. Game time in Bloomington, Illinois is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

Augustana drove 95 yards in 3:04 on its final possession, drawing to within 28-27 of Elmhurst on a 2-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback David Lee (Springfield HS, Springfield, Ill.) to classmate A.J. Hoger (Cary-Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) with 41 seconds left. The Viking coaching staff then made the decision to go for the win, faking the kick and going for a potential game-winning two-point conversion. Unfortunately, holder Danny Hess' (Naperville North HS, Naperville, Ill.) pass fell incomplete in the end zone, allowing the Bluejays to escape with the win.

Statistically this season, Augustana is averaging 17.8 points and 284.0 total yards per game while allowing averages of 24.6 and 386.2, respectively. Lee has completed 144 of 250 passes (57.6%) for 1,485 yards and eight touchdowns with six interceptions. With one game remaining in his Viking career, he has a school-record 494 completions in 807 attempts (61.2%) for 5,626 yards and 36 touchdowns. With 21 pass attempts this Saturday, he would pass Ken Anderson as the school record-holder in that category. He sits 505 yards short of Anderson's record for career passing yards. In addition, his 6,325 yards of total offense are 354 shy of Anderson's school record. The senior captain already holds seven Augustana passing and total offense records.

Senior wide receiver Zachary McCullough (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.), who had eight catches for 112 yards against Elmhurst, leads the Vikings with 31 catches and 364 receiving yards this season. Senior tight end Keith Abbey (Rich East HS, Park Forest, Ill.) (23 receptions, 232 yards and three touchdowns) and sophomore wide receiver Nick Krantz (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) (22-294-3) have been Lee's other favorite targets.

On the ground, Augustana has been led by junior Brett McWilliams (Hononegah HS, Roscoe, Ill.), senior A.J. Hoger (Cary-Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) and sophomore Eric Chandler (Cary-Grove HS, Cary, Ill.). McWilliams has carried 98 times for 385 yards and five touchdowns. Hoger has 166 yards on 34 carries and Chandler 151 yards and two touchdowns on 39 attempts.

Sophomore linebacker Erik Westerberg (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.), who entered the Elmhurst game third in the nation in solo tackles, added seven against the Bluejays-to go along with four assists-and leads the Vikings with 69 solo and 93 total stops this season. His 48 solo tackles in six CCIW games are 11 more than anyone else in the conference.

Junior linebacker Joe Weber (Marmion Academy, South Elgin, Ill.), who is third on the team with 43 tackles, leads the Vikings with five sacks, five tackles for loss and three fumble recoveries. Senior corner Ben Hall (University HS, Normal, Ill.) is tied with freshman safety Bo Goshorn (Romeoville HS, Romeoville, Ill.) for the team lead with two interceptions.

Junior Arnie Fitzwater (Union HS, Waterford, Wis.) tied Jim Ogan's 1967 school record with a 76-yard punt Saturday and leads the CCIW with an average of 40.9 yards per kick in league play. Overall this season, he's averaging 40.4 yards per punt with an outstanding 35.5 net average.

This Saturday's opponent, Illinois Wesleyan, is 8-1 overall and in second place in the CCIW at 5-1. However, Augustana has won eight of the last 10 meetings, including a 20-17 win at Ericson Field in last year's season finale.

The Titans are averaging 23.4 points and 335.2 total yards (106.9 rushing/228.3 passing) per game on offense. They've been outstanding defensively, allowing just 282.2 total yards (128.6 rushing/153.7 passing) and 11.2 points per contest.

The defense is led by senior linebacker Ryan Gresko. A first team All-CCIW selection last year, Gresko is IWU's leading tackler this season with 69, including eight for loss. Senior strong safety P.J. Cummings, a 2010 second team all-conference pick, leads the Titans with two interceptions and two fumble recoveries. Senior defensive end Ryan Jenkins has team highs of 10½ tackles for loss and nine quarterback sacks. He and Gresko have each forced a pair of fumbles.

Sophomore quarterback Rob Gallik leads the IWU offense. He's completed 159 of 256 passes (62.1%) this season for 1,985 yards and 12 touchdowns. Gallik has been intercepted 10 times. His favorite target is senior Joey Driver, a second team All-CCIW selection a year ago. Driver has team highs of 36 receptions and 487 yards. His five touchdown catches are one less than the team leader, junior Tate Musselman (20-330-6). Junior Joe Musso has 25 catches for 292 yards.

Junior Cameron Blossom has replaced the injured T.J. Stinde at running back and leads the Titans in rushing with 317 yards on 106 carries (3.1 yard per carry). Sophomore fullback Sean Conley has carried 45 times for 161 yards (3.6 ypc) and leads the team with seven rushing touchdowns.

AUGUSTANA-ILLINOIS WESLEYAN SERIES: Illinois Wesleyan leads this series by a margin of 40-35-1...Augustana has won eight of the last 10 games since 2001...At one time Illinois Wesleyan led the series by a whopping 32-12-1 margin but 11 straight victories by Augustana trimmed the margin to 32-24-1 heading into the 1992 season...The Vikings have had the upper hand since 1981, winning 22 of the 30 meetings since then...Illinois Wesleyan is the only team in the CCIW with a winning record against the Vikings.
