NEW EXHIBIT IN SPECIAL COLLECTIONS
"Worth A Thousand Words: Nineteenth Century British Illustrated Books"
For many years, books for people of all ages included illustrations along with the text. Such images are often unfamiliar to most of today's readers because, whether for scholarly or economic reasons, most of these books are printed today without the illustrations that originally accompanied them. This is unfortunate because many of these illustrations are great works of art and illuminate their accompanying text. The nineteenth century in Britain was a golden era for book illustration, producing some of the most important and beautiful illustrated books ever made. This exhibit is a wonderful opportunity to see text and image together. It features illustrated editions of works by authors such as Charles Dickens and Jane Austen, and illustrators including Thomas Rowlandson, George Cruikshank, and Walter Crane.

Laura's research leave was spent doing initial research and on-the-ground interviews for her new project about transportation ethics. She seeks to take the "what would Jesus drive?" campaign, begun by the Evangelical Environmental Network in 2002, to the next level. Our transportation choices on the individual level, and the transportation systems we create on the collective level, have far-reaching moral implications, in the social, environmental, and personal realms. Please join her as she explores the ethical dimensions of "how we get from Point A to Point B."

The collector Les Bell will give a short talk and refreshments will be provided
Collected by artist and St. Ambrose University professor of art Les Bell, the items in the library's new exhibit feature decorative commercial products ranging from boxes of toys to laundry powder that display methods of hand lettering and simple illustration before they were eclipsed by photographic imagery and typography. Bell says, "What interests me most is lettering that has initially been done by hand before being photographed and printed; and simple, flat-color illustration." Colorful, quirky, and culturally rich, this exhibit is fun as well as educational.

Presidential Research Fellowship
Eligibility: All tenure-track and tenured faculty
Deadline: December 15
Notification: January 15; funding disbursed July and August
Description
Presidential Research Fellowships are intended to support faculty research, scholarship and artistic work at Augustana. The fellowships will pay up to $4,000 for a faculty research project to be undertaken in the summer. Up to $750 is available for travel and expenses. The proposal should constitute a new area of research, a new area of an existing research agenda, or support for substantial, ongoing work. Proposals are invited in any of the four areas of scholarship: discovery, teaching, integration and application (outlined by Ernest Boyer in Scholarship Reconsidered) as well as in artistic work. Proposals are competitive and will be reviewed and ranked by an off-campus evaluator. Priority will be given to faculty who were not awarded a Presidential Research Fellowships in the previous year. Faculty members who have summer research funding as part of their contracts in a given year are not eligible for Presidential Research Fellowships in that year. PRF funds are available only to tenured and tenure-track faculty.
Submission to a peer-reviewed journal-or the equivalent for an artistic project-is normally expected within a year (by July the following year); in disciplines where such a deadline is inappropriate, please include a date for submission in the proposal. A report on the research, a copy of the letter of submission, and a copy of the paper will be due at the same time. Publication or acceptance within 18 months of August 15th of the year the award was granted will result in an additional $1,000 stipend.
Guidelines
Proposals should address the specific nature and scope of the research, as well as its likely audience. Proposals should be no more than five pages, including a detailed budget for any expenses and a description of the proposed venue for publication or performance. External readers will evaluate proposals and make a recommendation.

Responsibilities of the Grantee
- If you have received PRF funds in the past five years, please indicate in your proposal if and where the project resulted in publication.
- Presidential Research Fellows will be expected to do a substantial portion of the search on campus through the summer of the award, unless the research calls them away from the area.
- Presidential Research Fellows will not be eligible for summer teaching other than travel courses lasting no more than two weeks.
- A report on the research, a copy of the letter of submission, and a copy of the paper will be due to Mary Koski and the Dean of the College within a year of the award money being dispersed.
- Acknowledgement of Augustana financial assistance in products produced from work.
Summer Research Fellowships
Application Deadline: January 20, 2012
Augustana Student Summer Research Fellowships will again be available for the summer of 2012. These fellowships include a summer stipend plus expenses for a student to do some type of original research under the direction of a faculty member. These awards include a stipend of up to $3,000 plus expenses. PROPOSING AN OFF-CAMPUS OR INTERNATIONAL PROGRAM?
The deadline for any program proposal for a study abroad program or domestic off-campus study program for the 2013-2014 academic year has been moved from December 16th until January 9th to allow faculty the Winter break to finalize their proposals. Program proposals can be for any of the following:
- A term or half-term (domestic or international ) program using a team of Augustana faculty or a combination of Augustana faculty and 3rd party providers. (ex. East Asia, Holden, Brazil )
- A summer language immersion or other program type (domestic or international) (ex. Spanish in the Andes, Rocky Mountain Geology, Lit & Music in Paris)
- An on-campus course which includes a travel component during Fall, Winter or Spring Break or in early summer. (ex. Religion in Rome, Classics in Greece, etc.)
- A for-credit program fully contained within a term break (ex. Nicaragua Spring Break programs of recent years.)
If you are interested in leading a program in 2013-2014, please schedule a meeting with Allen Bertsche in the next few weeks so he can assist you with the proposal process.
If you have lead a program and wish to repeat it, the same basic principles apply as with new programs, save that you can focus your proposal on the new or altered components of the original program. If you are planning to lead a program that is running this year or has run any prior year, you must reapply with a proposal. Only programs which are offered each academic year do not need to reapply if they wish to run in 2013-2014.

The Midwest Journal of Undergraduate Research would like to invite all undergraduate students from any ACM institution to submit manuscripts from any discipline to be considered for publication in the journal's 2012 issue. Works may be submitted to: mjursub@monmouthcollege.edu
