2011 Season - Vikings go 1-3 at UWSP tournament

Junior Kelsey Mikula moved into 10th place on Augustana's single match list for assists with 60 in a 3-2 loss to Carroll at the Wisconsin-Stevens Point Tournament over the weekend of October 21-22.

STEVENS POINT, Wis.- The Augustana volleyball team went 1-3 this weekend at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point October Tournament. The Vikings fell to the hosts and St. Norbert on Friday before splitting a pair of matches with Carroll on Saturday. Now 8-19 this season, Augustana hosts Carthage in a 7:30 p.m. CCIW match on Tuesday, October 25 at Carver Center.

UW-Stevens Point 3, Augustana 0 (25-9; 25-9; 25-9)

The Pointers defeated Augustana in three straight 25-9 sets to win their 12th straight match and improve to 20-6 on the year. Three first-year players led the Vikings. Emily Leazer (St. Viator HS, Mt. Prospect, Ill.) recorded four kills and four digs. Stephanie Petkovsek (Lisle HS, Lisle, Ill.) also had four digs and added a team-high seven assists and Samantha Kammerman (Sherrard HS, Milan, Ill.) had three kills.

St. Norbert 3, Augustana 1 (25-18; 25-18; 22-25; 25-21)

In Friday’s second match, Augustana went four sets with a 21-5 St. Norbert team, but came up on the short end. The Vikings dropped the first two sets by identical 25-18 scores, rebounded to claim the third 25-22, but fell 25-21 in the fourth.

Three Vikings racked up at least 10 kills, with senior Brianna Skeens (Vernon Hills HS, Libertyville, Ill.) leading the way with 24. Leazer added 15 and Kammerman had 10. Skeens and junior Sarah Williams (Rockford Lutheran HS, Loves Park, Ill.) each had four blocks. Junior Kelsey Mikula (Coal City HS, Morris, Ill.) had 52 assists while Leazer picked up 22 digs and sophomore Katrina Colclasure (Tri-Valley HS, Bloomington, Ill.) added 20.

Carroll 3, Augustana 2 (20-25; 19-25; 25-19; 25-21; 15-13)

Carroll came back from an 0-2 deficit to beat the Vikings 3-2 on Saturday morning. Augustana took the first two sets 25-20 and 25-19, but couldn’t finish off the Pioneers, who came back to take the final three sets by scores of 25-19, 25-21 and 15-13.

Junior Kelsey Mikula (Coal City HS, Morris, Ill.) and senior Brianna Skeens (Vernon Hills HS, Libertyville, Ill.) both moved into the school’s single match top-ten performance list in this match. Mikula had 60 assists which is tied for 10th and Skeens had 27 kills, which also moves her to 10th on the single match performance chart. Mikula also had seven digs and three assisted blocks while Skeens had four blocks and two digs.

Freshman Emily Leazer (St. Viator HS, Mt. Prospect, Ill.) picked up 18 kills while freshman Samantha Kammerman (Sherrard HS, Milan, Ill.) had 12 and junior Sarah Williams (Rockford Lutheran HS, Rockford, Ill.) picked up 11. Katrina Colclasure (Tri-Valley HS, Bloomington, Ill.) had 32 digs while Leazer had 30 and freshman Julee Morrison (Chaparral HS, Scottsdale, Ariz.) added 18.

Augustana 3, Carroll 2 (25-22; 25-22; 15-25; 22-25; 15-11)

After falling to Carroll in five sets on Saturday morning, Augustana bounced back to return the favor in a five-set win over the Pioneers. The Vikings took each of the first two sets 25-22, with the Pioneers taking the next two 25-15 and 25-22. Augustana claimed the fifth and deciding set by a score of 15-11.

Kelsey Mikula (Coal City HS, Morris, Ill.) followed her 60 assist performance in the earlier match with Carroll by recording 45 assists in the victory. Emily Leazer (St. Viator HS, Mt. Prospect, Ill.) had 18 kills and senior Brianna Skeens (Vernon Hills HS, Libertyville, Ill.) chipped in with 14. Sophomore defensive specialist Katrina Colclasure (Tri-Valley HS, Bloomington, Ill.) had a team-high 23 digs, while Leazer and fellow freshman Julee Morrison (Chaparral HS, Scottsdale, Ariz.) had 20 and 18 digs respectively.
