2011 Season - Augustana vs. North Park Preview
![]() |
| Senior center Kelly Clennon and the rest of the Augustana gridders will be looking for their second straight win when North Park comes to Ericson Field for this Saturday's Homecoming contest. |
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - When Carthage quarterback T.J. Trepanier's fourth-down pass fell incomplete in the end zone with 1:06 remaining Saturday night, the Augustana football team could finally breathe a sigh of relief with a 19-13 win, its first of the season after a string of heartbreaking setbacks. The win was also the first for Rob Cushman as the Vikings' head coach. Cushman's crew now has a chance to even its College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin record at 2-2 when it hosts North Park at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, October 22. That contest will be a part of Homecoming festivities at Augustana.
Defense and special teams keyed Saturday's win over the Red Men. Both of Augustana's first half scores were set up by interceptions. After Carthage took an early 10-0 lead, Ben Hall's (University HS, Normal, Ill.) pick and 39-yard return led to a 24-yard Brady Rogers (Cherokee Trail HS, Aurora, Colo.) field goal. Then, a Bo Goshorn (Romeoville HS, Romeoville, Ill.) interception, 19-yard return and subsequent Red Men late hit set up Zachary McCullough's (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) 13-yard touchdown run which tied the game.
Augustana drove 39 yards for the go-ahead touchdown after stopping a Carthage fake punt attempt on the first possession of the second half. Another crucial sequence occurred midway through the third quarter when Arnie Fitzwater's (Union HS, Waterford, Wis.) 42-yard punt pinned the Red Men at their own one-yard line. Two plays later, a mishandled snap led to a Viking safety and a 19-10 lead.
The win was Augustana's 62nd against just 14 losses in the series with Carthage. There have been five ties. The Red Men, now 4-2 and 1-2 in the league, have not won in Rock Island since a 1970 win at Rock Island Public Schools Stadium and not since 1962 at Ericson Field, a span 24 games. Now 1-5 on the year and 1-2 in the CCIW, the Vikings have a chance to even their conference mark when North Park comes to Ericson Field Saturday for Homecoming.
For the first time this season, sophomore linebacker Erik Westerberg (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) wasn't Augustana's leading tackler Saturday. Sophomore nose tackle Carl Hartweg (Illini West HS, Carthage, Ill.) recorded eight solo stops against the Red Men. Westerberg made six solo tackles and still leads the CCIW in total (62) and solo (45) tackles. Other defensive leaders for the Vikings include Hall and Goshorn with two interceptions each. Hall, with one fumble recovery, leads the team with three takeaways. Senior defensive end Pete Schimeck (Benet Academy, Naperville, Ill.) is tied for the team lead with four tackles for loss and three sacks. Senior linebacker Danny Hess (Naperville North HS, Naperville, Ill.) also has four TFL's and junior linebacker Joe Weber (Marmion Academy, South Elgin, Ill.) has recorded three sacks as well. Fitzwater continues to lead the CCIW in punting with an average of 40.6 yards per kick and a net average of 36.6 yards.
On offense, senior quarterback David Lee (Springfield HS, Springfield, Ill.) is 100 of 179 (.559) for 952 yards and four touchdowns. He's been intercepted six times. With 131 yards on 44 carries, he's also the team's second leading rusher behind junior running back Brett McWilliams (Hononegah HS, Roscoe, Ill.), who has 298 yards and five touchdowns on 76 carries. Sophomore Nick Krantz (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) leads the Vikings with 17 catches for 184 yards and two touchdowns. Senior Zachary McCullough (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) is the leader in receiving yards with 195 on 16 catches.
Coach Scott Pethtel's North Park team got off to a great start this season, winning all three of its non-conference games by an average margin of 28.3 to 13.0. However, since league play started, the "other" Vikings have managed just nine points in losses to Elmhurst (59-6), Illinois Wesleyan (42-3) and Wheaton (28-0).
Quarterback Tyler Krebs leads the North Park option attack which averages 255.0 rushing yards per game and 4.7 yards per carry. Krebs has carried 110 times for 475 yards and four touchdowns-all team highs. Fullback Matt Hassan has 375 yards on 79 carries and slotbacks John Barnabee and Chris Broadway have piled up 249 and 209 yards with per-carry averages of 7.3 and 6.7, respectively.
The North Park passing attack has been nearly non-existent. Krebs has completed just five of 23 passes (.217) for 196 yards and two touchdowns. Backup Jon Williams has connected on just one of 15 throws for 15 yards. Sam Cochiaro is the only receiver with multiple catches. He's hauled in five passes for 128 yards (25.6 per reception) and one touchdown. Placekicker Tony Kebede has converted six of nine field goal attempts and is perfect inside 40 yards.
Defensively, North Park is allowing averages of 28.0 points and 389.3 total yards per contest. On the ground, opponents are averaging 166.5 yards per game and 5.1 per carry. They've also completed 92 of 170 passes (.541) for 1,337 yards (222.8 per game) and eight touchdowns. North Park has intercepted eight opposition passes.
Individually, safety Andy Saltzman is the team's top tackler with 21 solo stops and 39 total. He's also tied with the other Viking safety, Darius Dacanay for the team lead with three takeaways. Saltzman has a pair of interceptions and one fumble recovery, while Dacanay has picked off a team-high three passes. Linebacker Canmu Dennis leads with five tackles for loss and defensive end Deandre Fry with three sacks.
As part of Homecoming festivities Saturday, Augustana will be inducting six individual athletes and one team to the Tribe of Vikings Hall of Fame. The school's football program will be well represented. Coach Bob Reade's 1986 national championship team will be feted, along with former Viking gridders Greg King, Kurt Kapischke and Doug Felder. The 1986 squad finished 12-0-1 and captured Augustana's fourth straight NCAA Division III national title, a feat still unmatched at any level of NCAA football. King and Kapischke were stalwarts on the Viking offensive line during those national championship years. Felder, in addition to being a three-time national runner-up in the pole vault, was the leading receiver for Augustana's first Division III playoff qualifier in 1976. Other Tribe of Vikings inductees Saturday will be Ann Radloff Hubbard (tennis '80), Mark Brooks (basketball '73) and Tim Fader (wrestling '91).
AUGUSTANA-NORTH PARK SERIES: SERIES NOTES: Augustana has dominated this series between the two teams in the CCIW who share the Vikings nickname. Augustana leads 47-2 and has never lost a game to North Park in Rock Island with that streak now at 25. Augustana has won 39 straight overall in this series since a 23-12 North Park victory in 1971. In the last 25 games North Park has managed a total of just 146 points.

HEAD COACH ROB CUSHMAN
Rob Cushman is in his first season as the head coach of the Augustana football program. He has spent the previous three seasons serving as the Viking defensive coordinator. His coaching career began at Cal State-Chico in 1979. His first head coaching position was at Eastern Oregon University in La Grande, Oregon, where he spent five seasons before being named the first head coach at Feather River College in Quincy, California in 2002. He led the fledgling program to a 34-21 (.618) record in five seasons, reaching a post-season bowl game each year. He served as special teams coordinator and defensive backs coach at Ithaca College in Ithaca, New York in 2007, prior to coming to Augustana.
