2010 WTRACK INDOOR REVIEW

Hannah Hottle and Amy Walsh share MVP honors for Vikings during 2010 indoor season; Augustana ends up being ranked 30th in NCAA Division III

A pair of juniors was selected as the co-Most Valuable Performers for the 2010 Augustana women’s track & field team. Hannah Hottle (Monmouth-Roseville HS, Monmouth, Ill.) and Amy Walsh (Cary-Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) shared the honor after a vote of their teammates. The Vikings of veteran head coach Fred Whiteside finished the campaign ranked 30th in the final NCAA Division III team dual meet standings.

It was an unusual year for head coach Fred Whiteside’s as the team did not have either an individual conference champion nor did it have an NCAA Division III national meet qualifier. The last time the Vikings did not have a College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin champion during the indoor season was 2003.

Hottle was all over the place for Augustana in the middle distance events. She had the best time on the team in a total of five individual events and ran on two relay teams. She clocked the Vikings’ best times in the following events: 500 (1:20.33), 600 (1:40.54), 800 (2:18.73), 1000 (3:10.94) and mile (5:18.20). She also led off the 1600 relay which clocked a season’s best time of 4:06.22 and the distance medley which ran 12:36.90.

Hottle had the top individual performance at the CCIW meet, which was held in Naperville, Illinois on February 26-27. She was third in the 800 with a time of 2:20.00 and she also ran on the distance medley relay team that placed second in 12:36.90. Joining her on that unit were Walsh, freshman Sarahbeth Jones (Warren Township HS, Wadsworth, Ill.) and freshman Annie Heifner (Oregon HS, Oregon, Wis.).

Walsh turned in the best time for the Blue & Gold in the 300 (:44.48), 55 hurdles (:09.27) and ran on the 1600 and distance medley relay squads.

Jones and Theresa Coverick (Stagg HS, Palos Park, Ill.) were voted co-winners of the Most Valuable Freshman award. Jones placed fifth in the CCIW in the 800 with a time of 2:21.76 and she was also on the distance medley relay that placed second in the conference. Coverick was the top distance runner for the Vikings as she was the team’s best times in the 3000 (10:54.07) and the 5000 (19:30.45).

The Erica Vortman Viking Spirit Award was shared by freshman Jennifer Prazak (Naperville North HS, Naperville, Ill.), senior Ainsley Fedler (Burlington HS, Burlington, Ill.) and senior Valerie Bustle (Geneseo HS, Geneseo, Ill.). The Most Improved Performer honor was shared by sophomore Catherine Foreman (St. Joseph-Ogden HS, St. Joseph, Ill.) and sophomore Katie Bedene (Grayslake North HS, Grayslake, Ill.).

The Vikings finished fifth in the CCIW championships. Besides the third and fifth in the 800 by Hottle and Jones, three other Augustana athletes earned place finishes in the meet. Fedler took fourth in the 55 with a time of :07.44. Senior Caitlin Quinn (Metamora HS, Metamora, Ill.) was fourth in the pole vault with a clearance of 10’ 2” and senior Libby Geison (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) took sixth in the same event with a height of 10’ 2”.

During the season Augustana won the nine team Sol Butler Classic in Dubuque on January 16 with 124 points.
