2008 WOMEN’S OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD REVIEW

Augustana women capture first CCIW outdoor championship since 2001; Marissa Banks, Liz Driscoll and Keli Coleman compete at nationals

Senior Liz Driscoll (Lyons Township HS, LaGrange, Ill.) and sophomore Marissa Banks (Ames HS, Ames, Iowa) each won two events to help the 2008 Augustana women's track & field team to its first CCIW outdoor championship since 2001. Driscoll and Banks joined junior sprinter Keli Coleman (Carmel HS, Grayslake, Ill.) in competition at the NCAA Division III national meet as well, with Banks bringing home All-America honors in the discus. Coach Fred Whiteside's Vikings ended up tied for 44th as a team at nationals and also finished the season ranked 11th in the nation in the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Caches Association power rankings.

The season got off to a great start as Augustana won its own Early Spring Opener on March 20. The Vikings won 11 events, including two by Banks, to amass 308 points and easily outdistance the rest of the six team field. Lindsey Homfeldt (Marquette HS, Ottawa, Ill.) and Kelsey Duhai (Woodstock HS, Woodstock, Ill.) each picked up two of Augustana's eight wins the following week as the team took the championship of the 16-team Viking Olympics.

Whiteside's charges had another strong showing at the Central Invitational on April 5, finishing third in a 20-team field and behind only Division I Drake and Division II Minnesota-Duluth. Individually, Coleman took the 100 meters in a time of :12.17 and Banks set a school record with a 150’ 7” mark in the hammer throw. The following week, the team headed to Macomb, Illinois to compete in Western Illinois' Lee Calhoun Memorial. Facing another strong field in which eight of the 11 teams were NCAA Division I members, the Vikings took fifth place and were tops among the non-Division I schools. Driscoll, in the 800, and Brittany Prazak (Naperville North HS, Naperville, Ill.), in the 3000 steeplechase, picked up individual wins.

On April 18, the Vikings came out on top of a six-team field at the Augustana Invitational. Augustana finished with 258.5 points, 33.5 points ahead of second place Northern Illinois.

At the Drake Relays on April 25-26, Augustana got three top ten finishes. The 4x200 team of Coleman, Kai Frazier (United Township HS, Moline, Ill.), Ainsley Fedler (Burlington HS, Burlington, Iowa), and Krista Dayton (Grinnell HS, Grinnell, Iowa) and 4x800 team of Hannah Hottle (Monmouth-Roseville HS, Monmouth, Ill.), Samantha Laskowski (Reavis HS, Oak Lawn, Ill.), Meaghan Reaney (Lincoln-Way Central, New Lenox, Ill.) and Nikki Rohner (Hinsdale South HS, Burr Ridge, Ill.) each placed ninth and the sprint medley team of  Coleman, Homfeldt, Dayton and Driscoll finished 10th. Meanwhile, Viking teammates Duhai and Suzanne Udehn (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) were winning the long and triple jumps, respectively, at the Loras Open.

North Park University was the host of the CCIW Championships on May 2-3. Despite being in fifth place after the first day, Augustana was able to come back behind seven individual titles to take the team championship. The Vikings finished with 171 points, just ahead of runner-up Wheaton’s 168 and third-place Illinois Wesleyan’s 165. Individual champions included Driscoll in the 800 (2:19.68) and 1500 (4:39.91), Banks in the shot (42’ 6”) and discus (146’ 3”), Coleman in the 100 (:12.16), Homfeldt in the 400 hurdles (1:06.33) and Duhai in the triple jump (37’ 4”). Coleman’s :11.96 in the 100 meter preliminaries was a new school record. Augustana’s CCIW championship was its first since 2001 and 11th overall.

Viking athletes took advantage of a pair of twilight meets to either reach national qualifying standards or better previous marks. Banks set her second and third school records of the season with a 44’ 5 ½” shot put at the University of Chicago’s Penultimate Open and a 158’ 9” mark in the discus at the Augustana Twilight meet. Other qualifying marks in the two meets included Homfeldt’s :14.95 in the 100 hurdles and Frazier’s :12.31 in the 100 at the Augustana Twilight. The 4x400 relay team of Homfeldt, Fedler, Frazier and Coleman recorded a :48.44 at the Augustana Twilight to qualify as well and Driscoll ran a track-record 4:35.76 in the 1500 at the Penultimate Open. The Augustana Twilight also produced one more school record, as Hottle ran an 11:45.9 in the 3000 meter steeplechase.

Banks, Driscoll, and Coleman all competed at the national meet with Banks’ throw of 154’ 10” in the discus earning her a third place finish and her third All-American award. She won two as a freshman in 2007. Driscoll finished 12th in the 1500 finals and Coleman competed in both the 100 and 200, but failed to qualify for the finals in either. The Vikings finished tied for 44th as a team.

Driscoll was chosen as the team’s 2008 Most Valuable Performer. Hottle was the Most Valuable Freshman while five athletes, Duhai, Ellen Adams (Glenbard West HS, Glen Ellyn, Ill.), sophomore distance runner Kelsey Unseth (Willowbrook HS, Villa Park, Ill.), sophomore pole vaulter and javelin thrower Libby Geison (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) and senior hurdler Katie Lukowicz (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.), shared Most Improved. 2008 captains were Driscoll, Katie Morris (Brimfield HS, Brimfield, Ill.), who competed in the long and triple jumps; sprinter and long jumper Laura Wittland (Notre Dame HS, Quincy, Ill.); Johanna Voorhees (ROWVA HS, Oneida, Ill.) who competed in the javelin and hurdles; and distance runner Melissa Engel (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.). The Erica Vortman Viking Spirit Award went to Engel and sophomore hurdler Valerie Bustle (Geneseo HS, Geneseo, Ill.).
