2012 Season - 2008 Women's Track Review, Indoor

2008 WTRACK INDOOR REVIEW

Five individual CCIW champions and two All-America performances highlight women’s indoor season

Sophomore Marissa Banks (Ames HS, Ames, Iowa) and junior Keli Coleman (Carmel HS, Grayslake, Ill.) capped their indoor season by claiming All-America honors at the NCAA Division III championship in Ada, Ohio on March 15. Banks finished 3rd in the shot put with a school-record throw of 44’ 11’ ½” while Coleman ran a :07.18 in the 55-meter dash to finish fifth. Banks and Coleman were joined by senior Liz Driscoll (Lyons Township HS, LaGrange, Ill.), junior Kelsey Duhai (Woodstock HS, Woodstock, Ill.), and junior Paula Neiweem (Warren Township HS, Gurnee, Ill.) as CCIW individual champions as well.

The Augustana women’s team finished their indoor season with a 15th place finish at the national meet and a final ranking of 10th nationally in the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association poll. The Vikings also finished third at the CCIW championship.

Augustana opened the season with a third place finish at the University of Chicago Invitational on January 19 with Banks and Coleman individual winners in the shot and 55, respectively. They followed that up by winning the Midwest Invitational in Monmouth, Illinois on January 26. The Vikings won five events as Coleman continued her dominance in the 55 (:07.25) and also won the 200 (:26.45). Other winners were Driscoll in the 3000 (10:53.57), sophomore Jillian Rigert (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) in the 5000 (19:37.24), and junior Suzanne Udehn (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) in the long jump (17’ 0”).

At the Illinois Wesleyan Invitational on February 9, the Vikings finished sixth, but did have three individual winners, with Coleman running a :07.14 in the 55, Driscoll running a 5:08.31 in the mile and Banks throwing 44’ ¾” in the shot. Coleman recorded another win in the 55 at the Whitewater Invitational on February 16, with a time of :07.24 and was joined by the distance medley team of freshman Hannah Hottle (Monmouth-Roseville HS, Monmouth, Ill.), junior Lindsey Homfeldt (Ottawa Marquette HS, Ottawa, Ill.), junior Krista Dayton (Grinnell HS, Grinnell, Iowa), and Driscoll, who had a winning time of 12:17.69.

Driscoll recorded another win at the Iowa Hawkeye Invitational on February 23 when she ran a 5:04.85 mile. Sophomore Ellen Adams (Glenbard West HS, Glen Ellyn, Ill.) ran a 10:51.67 in the 3000 to join Driscoll as an individual winner, as did freshman Kristy Klouda (West Chicago HS, Winfield, Ill.), who recorded a 9’ ¼” mark in the pole vault.

At the CCIW Championship meet held at Carthage College in Kenosha on March 1, the Vikings produced five individual champions and broke three school records in recording a third place team finish. Coleman won the 55 again, this time with a school-record :07.08. She also broke her own school record in the 200 with a third-place time of :25.68. Neiweem won the 20-pound weight throw with a school-record heave of 49’ 7 ¾”. Driscoll won the mile with a time of 5:05.01, Duhai won the triple jump with a leap of 36’ 8 ¼”, and Banks had a throw of 44’ 3 ¼” to win the shot.

The Vikings sent three participants to the NCAA Division III Indoor Championship at Ada, Ohio on March 15. Coleman, Banks, and Driscoll competed in the 55, shot put, and mile, respectively. The marks put up by Duhai and Neiweem at the CCIW Championship also met the NCAA provisional qualifying standards, but neither made the field. Coleman ran a :07.18 to take fifth in the 55 and Banks unleashed her school-record 44’ 11 ½” throw in shot to take third place. Driscoll ran a 5:09.34 in her qualifying heat, but failed to make the finals.
