2006 WOMEN’S INDOOR TRACK & FIELD REVIEW

Meghan Voiland and Keli Coleman named All-Americans as Voiland finishes second in finish in the pole vault and Coleman takes sixth in the 55 meter dash at NCAA Division III national meet; Coleman sets several school records in 55 meter dash; Vikings finish fourth in CCIW

Meghan Voiland (Yorkville HS, Yorkville, Ill.) became an All-American for the fifth time in her career with a runner-up finish in the pole vault (12’ 3 ¾”) at the NCAA Division III national indoor track & field championship at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota on March 10-11.  Voiland was named an All-American three times indoors (2004-05-06) and twice outdoors (2004-05).  Voiland also qualified for the meet in the triple jump and 55 meter hurdles.  Keli Coleman (Carmel HS, Grayslake, Ill.) also earned All-American status with a sixth place finish in the 55 meter dash (:07.20).  Other qualifiers included Theresa Suwannapal (Winnebago HS, Winnebago, Ill.) (55 meter hurdles), Suzanne Udehn (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) (triple jump), and Sara Bremer (Parkway South HS, Manchester, Mo.), Jacquelyn Olsen (Richmond Burton HS, Spring Grove, Ill.), Lindsey Homfeldt (Ottawa Marquette HS, Ottawa, Ill.), and Jessica Corvo (Downers Grove North HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) (1600 meter relay). 

The Vikings finished fourth at the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin indoor track & field championships on February 25 in Kenosha, Wisconsin.  The team scored 117.83 points, finishing behind North Central (146.50 points), Illinois Wesleyan (130.83 points), and Carthage (128.33 points).  Coleman was crowned champion in the 55 meter dash with a time of :07.17.  She continued to lower her school record that she has set several times throughout the season.  Voiland brought home another individual title with a win in the triple jump with a leap of 37’ 10”.  The 1600 meter relay team of Olsen, Coleman, Corvo, and Kristen Ufheil (Annawan HS, Annawan, Ill.) also brought home first place honors with a time of 1:45.63.  Second place finishers for Augustana were Coleman in the 200 meter dash (:26.22), Voilland in the pole vault (12’ ¾”), and Corvo, Bremer, Ufheil, and Olsen in the 1600 meter relay (4:03.56).

The women’s track & field team won the Augustana Leif Ericson Invitational on February 4 and the Midwest Invitational in Monmouth, Illinois on January 28.  At Augustana, the Vikings had wins in twelve of the sixteen events to win the four team meet.  Augustana finished with 117.5 points, defeating Truman (68.5 points), St. Francis (12 points), and the Viking Alumni (10 points).  The Vikings produced several first place finishers. 

Coleman set a new venue record at Pepsi-Co Recreation Center, winning the 55 meters in :07.28.  Beth Untz (Oregon HS, Oregon, Ill.) tied for first in the pole vault (10’ 1 ¼”) and Erin Blecha (Downers Grove North HS, Downers Grove North, Ill.) won the high jump (5’ 1”).  Udehn won the long jump (16’ 1 ¾”) and the triple jump (35’ 11 ¼”).  Liz Driscoll (Lyons Township HS, LaGrange, Ill.) finished first in the mile run (5:18.26).  Suwannapal raced to victory in the 55 meter hurdles (:08.69).  Corvo won the 400 meters in 1:02.14.  Karina Carson (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) had a close race in the 800 meters, winning in 2:23.46. 

The relay teams were also strong for the Vikings.  The 800 meter relay team of Olsen, Coleman, Corvo, and Ufheil narrowly held off Truman’s top team, winning by :00.50 seconds in a time of 1:48.22.  The 1600 meter relay team had an easier win, with Homfeldt, Bremer, Corvo, and Ufheil racing to victory in 4:06.58.  The 3200 meter relay team of Driscoll, Susan Thompson (Glenbard South HS, Glen Ellyn, Ill.), Laura Meyer (Hononegah HS, Roscoe, Ill.), and Carson also outdistanced the competition and finished in 10:36.15. 

At the Midwest Invitational, the Vikings Coleman was once again outstanding in the 55 meter race, sprinting past the competition in a time of :07.26 seconds.  Augustana added four more individual first place finishes on the day.  Udehn was a double winner for the Vikings, finishing first in the long jump (17’ 1 ¾”) and winning the triple jump (36’ 1 ¼”).  Carson ran a 2:24.80 to win the 800 meter dash.  Liz Driscoll (Lytons Township HS, LaGrange, Ill.) won the mile run in 5:29.70. 

The Vikings also had a strong showing in the relays, racing to three more first place finishes.  The 800 meter relay team of Coleman, Olsen, Homfeldt, and Kali Minkler (Lincoln Way HS, New Lenox, Ill.) finished first in 1:48.56.  Corvo, Bremer, Homfeldt, and Olsen were victorious in the 1600 meter relay in 4:05.14.  The distance medley relay team of Melissa Engel (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.), Sarah Kwasigroch (Carmel HS, Wauconda, Ill.), Nikki Rohner (Hinsdale South HS, Burr Ridge, Ill.), and Laura Meyer (Hononegah HS, Roscoe, Ill.) won the race with a time of 13:38.64.
