2005 WOMEN’S INDOOR TRACK & FIELD REVIEW

MEGHAN VOILAND & THERESA SUWANNAPAL BOTH EARN ALL-AMERICAN HONORS AS VIKINGS PLACE 20TH AT NCAA DIVISION III NATIONAL MEET; JODI STANTON WINS CCIW SHOT PUT WITH NEW CONFERENCE AND SCHOOL RECORD; AUGUSTANA PLACES THIRD IN CCIW MEET

Sophomores Meghan Voiland (Yorkville HS, Yorkville, IL) and Theresa Suwannapal (Winnebago HS, Winnebago, IL) earned All-American honors at the NCAA Division III national indoor track & field championship on March 11-12 in Bloomington, Illinois. Voiland placed second in the pole vault with a leap of 11’ 11 ¾”, continuing her remarkable string of success in national competition. She has now been named All-American three times. Last year she was fourth in the indoor national meet and seventh outdoors.

Joining her in the All-American circle was Suwannapal who placed sixth in the 55 hurdles with a time of :08.38, breaking her own school record of :08.46 set on March 4 in Kenosha, Wisconsin. She made it to the finals by running an identical time of :08.38 in the preliminary round.

Thanks to the heroics of Voiland and Suwannapal the Vikings of veteran head coach Fred Whiteside placed 20th in the team standings with 11 points.

Augustana had a fine indoor season, winning the Midwest Invitational (01/29), the Leif Ericson Invitational (02/05) and the Fighting Scot Invitational (02/12). The Vikings were third in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin championship on February 26.

Junior Jodi Stanton (Stephen F. Austin HS, El Paso, TX) broke her own conference and school records in winning the shot put at the CCIW meet at the Shirk Center on the campus of Illinois Wesleyan University. She won for the second year in a row with a toss of 43’ 6 ½”, shattering both her old school record of 41’ 10 ¾” set in 2004 and the conference record of 41’ 7”, also set a year ago.

Carthage won the team title for the fifth straight year with 163 points while North Central was second with 130 and Augustana took third with 106. Illinois Wesleyan was just behind the Vikings in fourth with 94 points while Wheaton (80), North Park (36), Millikin (25) and Elmhurst (24) rounded out the field.

Stanton was the only individual winner for veteran head coach Fred Whiteside’s team although Augustana did have three individuals and three relay teams place second. Sophomore Jacquelyn Olsen (Richmond Burton HS, Spring Grove, IL) placed second in the 400 with a time of 1:00.49 as did sophomore Erin Blecha (Downers Grove North HS, Downers Grove, IL) in the high jump with a clearance of 5’ 2 ¼” and sophomore Meghan Voiland (Yorkville HS, Yorkville, IL) in the pole vault at 12’ 00 ½”.

Placing second among the relays were the 800, 1600 and 3200 teams. The 800 relay team of sophomore Therese Suwannapal (Winnebago HS, Winnebago, IL), Olsen, junior Jessica Corvo (Downers Grove North HS, Downers Grove, IL) and freshman Kaylee Schultz (Ottawa Marquette HS, Ottawa, IL) clocked a runner-up time of 1:48.58. The 1600 relay of Corvo, Olsen, sophomore Kristen Ufheil (Annawan HS, Annawan, IL) and junior Sara Bremer (Parkway South HS, Manchester, MO) placed second in 4:06.64 while the 3200 relay of freshman Liz Driscoll (Lyons Township HS, LaGrange, IL), Bremer, junior Karina Carson (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, IA) and junior Tracey Bastiaans (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, IL) ran 9:54.71 to finish second.

Suwannapal was a busy young lady during the meet as she took third in the 55 hurdles in :08.50, which qualified her for the NCAA Division III national meet, fifth in the 200 in :26.78 and sixth in the 55 dash in :07.55. Corvo placed third in the 400 in 1:00.78 and Voiland was third in the triple jump with a leap of 36’ 4 ¼” and fifth in the 55 hurdles in :08.66. Also taking third was senior Desiree Butcher (Bishop McNamara HS, Wilmington, IL) in the 20 pound weight throw with a toss of 42’ 2 ¼”. Junior Casey Jacobs (Freeport HS, Freeport, IL) was fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 35’ 5 ¼” and sophomore Laura Meyer (Hononegah HS, Roscoe, IL) was seventh in the mile in 5:25.16.
