KIM BAIER EARNS NCAA DIVISION III ALL-AMERICAN HONORS IN POLE VAULT; VIKINGS PLACED SECOND IN FIRST EVER CCIW INDOOR TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIP

Augustana College senior Kim Baier (Oswego HS, Montgomery, IL) earned All-American honors with a school record performance in the pole vault at the NCAA Division III National Indoor Track & Field Championship. Baier cleared 11' 4 1/2" in the final on Saturday, March 10, which was held at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh's Kolf Sports Center.

Laura Rosenberger of Eastern Mennonite won the event with a clearance of 11' 10 1/2" and Ellen Findlay of Wisconsin-LaCrosse was second with the same height. Kelly Bowen of Nebraska Wesleyan and Caroline Boatz of St. Benedict tied for third with a clearance of 11' 4 1/2" and Baier was fifth with the same height. Despite the individual championship performances of Janine Morris (West Chicago HS, West Chicago, IL), Kim Baier (Oswego HS, Montgomery, IL) and Tammie Beasley (Rockford East HS, Rockford, IL), the Augustana Vikings fell just short in an attempt to win the first ever College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Indoor Track & Field championship. Morris cleared 5' 1 3/4" to win the high jump while Baier soared over 11' 1/4" to win the pole vault. Beasley's victory came in the triple jump where she recorded a mark of 35' 11".

Both Morris and Beasley won in events which saw Augustana take the first two places. In the high jump Katie Reif (Immaculate Conception HS, Westchester, IL) was second with the same height of 5' 1 3/4" while Lisa Johnson (Oswego HS, Oswego, IL) was fifth at 4' 9 3/4". Behind Beasley in the triple jump Amy Tirmenstein (Lutheran North HS, St. Louis, MO) was second with a jump of 35' 3" and Johnson was sixth with a mark of 34' 4 1/2". In the pole vault Kim Nelson (Stark County HS, Lafayette, IL) and Manda Geerts (Morrison HS, Morrison, IL) tied for sixth with clearances of 8' 10 1/4".

Tirmenstein was second in the long jump with a leap of 17' 4 1/2" while Baier posted a mark of 17' 0" to finish fourth. Becca Parker (Moline HS, Moline, IL) closed out the field events for the Vikings by placing third in the shot (39' 5 1/2") and fifth in the 20 pound weight toss (36' 2 1/2").
