2011-12 Season - Vikings finish CCIW first day in third place

KENOSHA, Wisconsin – Led by the performance of number one singles player Kim Sawyer (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.), Augustana is in third place after the first day of competition at the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin women’s tennis championship on Friday, October 7. The Vikings scored 24 points and trail host Carthage by just four points in the race for second place.
Wheaton leads the field in the tournament, which is being contested at the Smeds Tennis Center in Kenosha, Wisconsin, with 42 points. Illinois Wesleyan and North Central are close behind Augustana with 22 points in a tie for fourth. Elmhurst has nine points in sixth and Millikin did not score yet.
Sawyer was outstanding as she defeated Marguerite Mahoney of Millikin 6-0; 6-0 in the first round and took care of Andrea Kerwin of Illinois Wesleyan 6-3; 6-1 in the semifinal. She will face Elizabeth Worsowicz of Wheaton in the championship on Saturday.
Senior Brittany Reece (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) will play for third place at number two singles. She started the tournament with a hard fought 2-6; 7-6 (7-5); 6-4 victory over Margaret Youel of North Central. Reece then lost to Sarah Ray of Wheaton 6-1; 6-0 in the semifinals. She rebounded with an 8-3 win over Nicole Darga of Elmhurst in the second round of the playbacks and will meet Helen Alix of Illinois Wesleyan for third place.
Junior Krista Panko (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) defeated Katie Hatch of North Central 6-4; 6-3 in the first round and fell to Kirsten Boyer of Wheaton 6-3; 6-4 in the semifinals at number three. She picked up an 8-1 victory over Jordyn Hoover of Elmhurst in the playback semifinals and will play against Lauren Drawbridge of Illinois Wesleyan for third place.
Sophomore Katie Scharnagle (Wheaton St. Francis HS, Lisle, Ill.) lost in the first round at number five singles to Stephanie Brunetti of North Central 6-2; 7-5. She had a bye in the first round of the playbacks and then beat Svenja Schroeder of Illinois Wesleyan 8-6 in the playback semifinals. Scharnagle will meet Abby Ludwig of Carthage for third place.
Sophomore Mariah Bardo (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) at number six singles will also play for third place. She defeated Reynolds Cross of North Central 3-6; 6-2; 6-1 in the first round and then lost to Julia Carey of Wheaton 6-1; 6-0 in the semifinals. Bouncing back from that, Bardo defeated Jennifer Guenther of Elmhurst 8-1 in the playback semifinals. Her opponent for third place will be Tara Casey of Illinois Wesleyan.
Junior Meghan Wethington (Geneseo HS, Geneseo, Ill.) beat Erin Henrickson of Carthage 6-2; 4-6; 6-4 in the first round before losing to Lauren Schlabach of Wheaton 6-2; 6-2 in the semifinals at number four. Wethington lost to Alissa Goetz of Illinois Wesleyan 8-1 in the playback semifinals.
In doubles action the number two team of Panko and Reece won over Jennifer Guenther and Kayla Magiapane of Elmhurst 6-0; 6-1 in the first round. The number three doubles team of freshman Chelsea Lavin (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) and sophomore Emily Kaczmarek (Glenbard South HS, Lombard, Ill.) beat Mamanda Bizub and Abby Ludwig of Carthage 2-6; 6-4; 6-3 in the first round.
