While Brittany Reece (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) and Kim Sawyer (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) participated in the ITA tournament in Kalamazoo, Michigan, the rest of the Augustana women’s tennis team took down Knox in a 7-2 dual match victory on Friday, September 30 to move to 7-6 on the season.
The loss of Reece and Sawyer meant that the Augustana lineup was adjusted from positions one through six. The Vikings got off to a good start as they took two out of three in doubles behind a win by Chelsea Lavin (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) and Emily Kaczmarek (Glenbard South HS, Lombard, Ill.) at second doubles with a score of 8-4 and Katie Scharnagle (St. Francis College Prep HS, Lisle, Ill.) and Caitee Margenthaler (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) at third doubles with a score of 8-5.
In singles Krista Panko (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) took the number one spot and recorded a 6-2, 6-2 victory with Meghan Wethington (Geneseo HS, Geneseo, Ill.) following close behind in a 6-0, 6-4 victory at number two. Number four singles player Mariah Bardo (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) moved up in the lineup to record a 6-3, 6-1 victory using high consistency while Emily Kaczmarek split sets and used a sharp tie-breaker to pull out the 6-2, 2-6, 11-9 victory at five singles. Callie Winter (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) used her steady play at six singles to also record a 6-3, 6-3 victory for the Vikings.
While the team looked sharp against Knox, the top two Augustana players were competing 300 miles away in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Reece battled through a tough match with Kenyon but fell 1-6, 5-7 in her opening match that was moved indoors because of weather conditions. Sawyer also dropped her opening match to the #8 seed from Chicago before finding her groove over the next two days to pull out victories over North Central, Wheaton, Kalamazoo, and powerhouse Denison. The four victories placed Sawyer in the back draw finals against the #9 seed from DePauw. Sawyer got down early in each set and never fully recovered as she was barely beaten 6-4, 6-4. The loss moved her to an impressive 15-3 on the season.
In doubles, Sawyer and Reece lost an early match to the #4 seed from Chicago before reeling off two victories to reach the back draw semi-finals. In the semi-finals the duo played impressive attacking doubles as they used high pressure returns to force the action against Alleghany. However, the pair couldn’t recover from an early break and were narrowly defeated 8-5.
Augustana wraps up its fall season this coming weekend in Kenosha, Wisconsin at the College Conference of Illinois Wisconsin tournament on Friday and Saturday, October 7-8.
