2011 Season - Vikings move up one spot in NCAA poll

The Augustana men's cross country team is ranked 11th in the most recent USTFCCCA poll. The Vikings won the Brissman-Lundeen Invitational last Friday in convincing fashion.

ROCK ISLAND, Illinois – A dominating win at the 33-team Brissman-Lundeen Invitational on Friday, September 23 in Rock Island, Illinois propelled the Augustana men's cross country team up to 11th in the latest NCAA Division III national poll. Veteran head coach Paul Olsen's team garnered 200 points, 26 more than a week ago, in the United States Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association weekly ranking.

Augustana had been ranked 12th each of the last two weeks after finishing second in the Luther Invitational on September 10 and sixth at the Illinois Intercollegiate Championships on Friday September 17. Last Friday, the Vikings compiled 43 points to take the team championship by 60 points over NAIA power Olivet Nazarene.

Olsen's team again showed the ability to use pack running at the Brissman-Lundeen Invitational with seven runners finishing in the top 25. Senior Mike Tisza (Hersey HS, Prospect Heights, Ill.) led the way for the Vikings with his third place finish. He was followed closely by juniors Jonathan Smith (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.), Brian Pollastrini (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.), and Justin Smith (Fenton HS, Bensenville, Ill.) who placed fifth, ninth, and eleventh respectively. Billy TenBusch (Prairie Ridge HS, Cary, Ill.), Nathan Smith (Fenton HS, Bensenville, Ill.), and Thomas Christian (Port Angeles HS, Port Angeles, Wash.) rounded out the top seven for Augustana.

The top 35 of the national poll continues to be heavily populated with teams representing the Midwest Region. Ten teams from the region made the rankings the Vikings' College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin foe North Central continuing to hold on to the number one ranking.
