2011 Season - Augustana records fifth straight shutout
|Sean Fidlow's fifth goal of the season was all the scoring the Vikings would need Sunday as they recorded their fifth consecutive shutout, beating Simpson 1-0 at Thorson-Lucken Field.|
ROCK ISLAND, Ill.-A 25-yard blast from Sean Fidlow (Carmel HS, Gurnee, Ill.) in the 22nd minute was all the scoring the Augustana men's soccer team would need Sunday, as they posted a 1-0 win over Simpson at Thorson-Lucken Field. The win was the Vikings' fifth consecutive shutout as they improved to 7-2 on the season. Simpson fell to 4-5-1.
Even playing without reigning CCIW Defensive Player of the Week Michael Buric (Notre Dame Prep, Scottsdale, Ariz.), Augustana's defense continued to be rock solid, allowing the Storm just five shots in the match. Senior Kurt Negwer (Lutheran North HS, Florissant, Mo.) filled in for Buric and along with senior Cory DeGrave (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.) and sophomore Evan Johnson (Glenbard South, Glen Ellyn, Ill.) provided coach Brenton Joseph with a formidable defensive line.
Tyler Cowherd (Bettendorf HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) started in goal for the Vikings and went the distance with three saves for his second solo shutout of the season. The sophomore has logged almost 320 minutes in goal since allowing his last goal on September 11 at Concordia.
Fidlow's goal was his team-leading fifth of the year and came on an assists from Matt Shipon (South Elgin HS, Elgin, Ill.). In addition to a 14-5 advantage in shots, including 11-3 in shots on goal, the hosts had a 7-3 edge in corners.
On Wednesday, September 28, the Vikings are back at Thorson-Lucken Field to host Coe in a 7:30 p.m. contest.
