2011 Season - 12th ranked Vikings impressive at Brissman/Lundeen

Junior Jonathan Smith placed fifth with a time of 25:12 to help 12th ranked Augustana to an impressive victory in the 33-team Brissman/Lundeen Invitational on Friday, September 23 at Saukie Golf Course in Rock Island, Illinois.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Once again showing impressive pack running, Augustana rolled to a convincing victory at the 33 team Brissman/Lundeen Invitational on Friday, September 23 at Saukie Golf Course in Rock Island, Illinois. The Vikings, currently ranked 12th in the latest NCAA Division III national poll, scored just 43 points and put their top five runners in the top 15 individuals.

Placing a distant second in the team standings was Olivet Nazarene, which scored 103 while Wisconsin-Stevens Point, ranked 17th in the nation, was third with 126. Lewis, an NCAA Division II school, was fourth with 142 and Illinois Wesleyan took fifth with 209. Truman State, another NCAA Division II team, placed sixth with 247 and Principia was seventh with 255. Simpson (259), Greenville (298) and Lincoln (320) rounded out the top 10.

One week ago, at the Illinois Intercollegiate Championships, Augustana had a 25 second differential between its first and seventh finishers. Tonight the gap was a little larger, 37 seconds, but still an impressive showing of grouping nicely over the 8,000 meter course.

Senior Mike Tisza (Hersey HS, Prospect Heights, Ill.) was the top Augustana finisher as he took third with a time of 25:06.5. Junior Jonathan Smith (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) grabbed fifth in 25:12.0 and junior Brian Pollastrini (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) was ninth in 25:14.7 to give the Vikings three finishers in the top 10.

Junior Justin Smith (Fenton HS, Bensenville, Ill.) was 11th in 25:19.4, senior Billy TenBusch (Prairie Ridge HS, Cary, Ill.) placed 15th in 25:25.3 and junior Nathan Smith (Fenton HS, Bensenville, Ill.)  finished 18th in 25:28.4. Senior Thomas Christian (Port Angeles HS, Port Angeles, Wash.) was the seventh man for the Vikings and he was 25th in 25:43.5.

Andrew McLain of Lewis was the individual winner with a time of 24:52.8.

Augustana will be in action next on October 8 at the Wartburg Invitational in Waverly, Iowa.
