2011 Season - Jones, Vikings each place seventh at Brissman-Lundeen

Junior Sarahbeth Jones placed seventh individually at the Brissman-Lundeen Invitational on Friday, September 22. She ran 22:32.1 over the 6,000 meter course at Saukie Golf Course in Rock Island.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Junior Sarahbeth Jones (Warren Township HS, Wadsworth, Ill.) once again turned in a tremendous performance for the Augustana women’s cross country team. She placed seventh individually at the Brissman/Lundeen Invitational on Friday, September 23 at Saukie Golf Course in Rock Island, Illinois.

Behind the stellar outing by Jones, who covered the 6,000 meter layout in 22:32.1, the Vikings scored 186 points to finish seventh in as a team in the 27-team field. Olivet Nazarene, with three runners in the top 10, won the event with 51 points. Truman State was second with 71 and Lewis took third with 135. St. Norbert (135), Grinnell (152), Illinois Wesleyan (156), Augustana (186), Monmouth (207), Cornell (223) and St. Ambrose (297) rounded out the top 10.


Karen Grauel of Truman State was the individual winner with a time of 21:53.4 while Lauren Versweyveld of Olivet Nazarene took second in 22:13.1.

While Jones was leading the way for Augustana, freshman Rebecca Sund (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) also turned in a fine race, taking 18th in 22:53.7. Junior Theresa Coverick (Stagg HS, Palos Park, Ill.) was 51st in 23:49.1.

The next three Viking finishers came in as a nice group with junior Annie Heifner (Oregon HS, Oregon, Wis.), sophomore Kristyn Barton  (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) and freshman Stephanie Burbidge (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) hitting the chute within two seconds of one another. Heifner was 60th in 24:00.3, Barton took 61st in 24:00.8 and Burbidge placed 62nd in 24:02.8. Freshman Jessica Bacon (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) was 72nd in 24:10.3 to finish as the seventh finisher for Fred Whiteside’s team.

Augustana will be in action next week on Friday, September 30 at the Coe Invitational in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
