GALESBURG, Ill. - After winning three matches last week by narrow 1-0 margins, Augustana was happy to take a 6-0 win over Knox in non-conference men’s soccer action on Thursday, September 22 in Galesburg, Illinois. Leading just 1-0 at halftime, the Vikings exploded for five goals in the final 45 minutes to move their winning streak to four straight.
Freshman Vincent Dal Pozzo (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) and senior Sean Fidlow (Carmel Catholic HS, Gurnee, Ill.) each scored two goals to lead the Augustana attack. The scoring outburst was uncharacteristic for head coach Brenton Joseph’s team this season. In the previous seven matches the Vikings had scored a total of just nine goals.
Dal Pozzo scored the first goal of the game, and the first of his collegiate career, in the 21st minute (20:24) of play with freshman Adam Bengfort (Davenport Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) picking up his first assist.
In the first half Augustana held a 6-0 edge over the Prairie Fire in shots attempted. In the second half the shot advantage was again won by the Vikings, this time by a count of 7-3, but five of those attempts found the back of the net.
Freshman Nathan Kyes (Oswego HS, Oswego, Ill.) scored just 14 minutes after intermission (59:00) with junior Jason Beckus (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) picking up an assist. Fidlow scored unassisted at 65:04 to make it 3-0 and Dal Pozzo added his second goal of the contest at 66:34 to bump the margin to 4-0. Fidlow assisted on Dal Pozzo’s second goal.
Freshman Alberto Ramirez (Wheaton North HS, Winfield, Ill.) scored unassisted at 69:32 and Fidlow closed out the night with an unassisted goal at 79:30 to make it a 6-0 final.
Sophomore Steve Zahrobsky (Downers Grove South HS, Woodridge, Ill.) worked 74:50 in the goal and picked up the victory, his first of the season. He recorded one save. Sophomore Tyler Cowherd (Bettendorf HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) played the last 15:10 and he had one save.
Augustana, which is ranked ninth in the latest NCAA Division III Central Region poll, is now 6-2-0 on the season with a four match winning streak. Knox falls to 1-5-0 on the year. The Vikings will host Simpson on Sunday, September 25 at 3:30 p.m. at Thorson-Lucken Field.
