2011 Season - Vikings win five-set thriller over North Park

Brianna Skeens had 24 kills Tuesday night to help lead Augustana to a five-set victory over North Park at Carver Center.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill.-Down 8-3 in the fifth and deciding set, Augustana rallied to pull out a 15-12 win over North Park Tuesday night at Carver Center, giving coach Jamie Walters a welcome birthday present. The home Vikings won the first two sets 25-16 and 25-18 before visitors came back to get sets three and four, 25-21 and 25-18. With the win, Augustana improves to 6-7 on the season while North Park drops to 9-6.

 Freshman Emily Leazer (St. Viator HS, Mt. Prospect, Ill.) started off the final set with a pair of service aces to give the hosts a 2-0 lead, but North Park came back to forge an 8-3 lead. Augustana then responded by winning 12 of the final 16 points of the match to get the win.

 Brianna Skeens (Vernon Hills HS, Libertyville, Ill.) had a huge night, recording 24 kills and four block assists, both team highs. Junior Sarah Williams (Rockford Lutheran HS, Loves Park, Ill.) had 11 kills and a pair of service aces. Leazer and fellow freshman Samantha Kammerman (Sherrard HS, Milan, Ill.) each contributed nine kills and had nine and eight digs, respectively.

 Junior setter Kelsey Mikula (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.) added to her team-best assist total with 42 in the match and also had 11 digs, one fewer than freshman Julee Morrison (Chaparral HS, Scottsdale, Ariz.). Sophomore Katrina Colclasure (Tri-Valley HS, Bloomington, Ill.) led the way with 23 digs and joined Leazer and Williams with two service aces.

 Up next the Vikings is a trip to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to compete in the Milwaukee School of Engineering Quadrangular. Augustana begins play at 11:00 Saturday, September 24 against the host Raiders.
