2011 Season - Augustana-Adrian Preview
![]() |
| Augustana senior cornerback Matt Glawe brings down Central's Ross Doehrmann last Saturday in Pella, Iowa. Glawe and his Viking teammates will be looking for their first win of the season when they host Adrian this Saturday at Ericson Field. |
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - A couple of Augustana turnovers set up short Central scoring drives as the Vikings dropped a tough decision to an Iowa Conference team for the second week in a row. Augustana will be looking to bounce back from Saturday's 31-23 road setback and get its first win of the season when it hosts Adrian this Saturday, September 17, at Ericson Field.
While disappointed with the close loss, the coaching staff saw positives as the Vikings battled traditional IIAC power Central. Augustana outgained the Dutch 416 total yards to 358. Sophomore wide receiver Nick Krantz (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) had a big day, with eight catches for 102 yards and a touchdown. Senior quarterback David Lee (Springfield HS, Springfield, Ill.) threw for 299 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for another score, but his two interceptions set up Central touchdown drives of just 16 and three yards. Another key play came when Dutch quarterback Nate Snead teamed up with his brother Jeremy for a 64-yard catch-and-run touchdown in the third quarter.
Defensively, the Vikings were led by sophomore linebacker Erik Westerberg (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.), who recorded seven solo tackles and assisted on seven more. Senior linebacker Danny Hess (Naperville North HS, Naperville, Ill.) made three tackles for loss and forced a fumble that was recovered by senior free safety Ben Hall (University HS, Normal, Ill.). Unfortunately, that was the only one of four Dutch fumbles that the Vikings could come up with.
Through two games, Lee has connected on 43 of 73 (.589) passes for 445 yards and two touchdowns with three interceptions. He's spread the wealth, with six receivers having caught at least four passes each. Senior Zachary McCullough (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.), with nine catches for 103 yards, leads the way. Senior tight end Keith Abbey (Rich East HS, Park Forest, Ill.) also has nine catches for 56 yards, followed by Krantz's eight receptions and six for 59 yards by freshman slot receiver Antonio Owens (Naperville North HS, Naperville, Ill.).
Owens is also the Vikings' second-leading ground gainer with 54 yards on nine carries (6.0 per carry). Junior running back Brett McWilliams (Hononegah HS, Roscoe, Ill.) leads the ground game with 92 yards and one touchdown on 24 carries.
Westerberg's 24 total tackles top the defense and he leads in both solo (13) and assisted (11) tackles as well. Mitch McGilliard (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) (5-9-14), Hess (10-3-13) and Robert Mago (Cary-Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) (7-5-12) are in double figures in total stops as well. Hess has recorded four tackles behind the line of scrimmage and also forced a pair of fumbles.
Adrian is led by second-year head coach Jim Deere. The Bulldogs were 5-5 in Deere's first season and finished second in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association with a record of 4-2. It was team's third straight second-place finish in the MIAA and its fourth in six seasons.
The Bulldogs are off to a fast start in 2011. They're 2-0 after a 27-6 win over Defiance this past Saturday. Adrian opened the season with a 77-7 pasting of Husson on September 2.
Junior quarterback Brandon Miller leads an Adrian offense that's averaging 52.0 points and 538.5 total yards per game this year. The Bulldogs have displayed great balance, averaging 262.0 yards rushing and 276.5 passing per game. Miller has completed 30 of 49 passes (.612) for 486 yards and four touchdowns with two interceptions. Sophomore running back Damon Brown has rushed for 223 yards (5.6 per carry) and a pair of touchdowns behind an offensive line that includes All-MIAA tackle Spencer Whittington (6-4, 286). Adrian also returns All-MIAA receiver Justin Hemm (eight catches, 137 yards and one touchdown), who doubles as the team's backup quarterback. Mitch Gabriele leads the Bulldogs this season with 14 receptions for 163 yards and two scores.
Defensively, the Bulldogs have had to replace a trio of All-MIAA selections, including both of the linebackers from its 4-2-5 alignment. That hasn't been a problem thus far, as Adrian is allowing only 174.0 total yards per game through two contests and sophomores Deontae Bridgeman and Hunter Juntunen, the team's new linebackers, lead in tackles with 16 and 11, respectively. Junior defensive back Joe Makowski has already recorded four quarterback sacks. Opponents have managed just 69.5 yards a game on the ground and only 1.8 per rushing attempt. The Bulldogs have been just as stingy against the pass, giving up just 17 completions in 50 attempts (.340) for 209 yards (104.5 per game).
ADRIAN SERIES RECORD: Augustana holds a 5-0 advantage in this series which began with a scintillating 22-21 win in the first round of the 1983 NCAA Division III playoffs. That game, played in a quagmire at Ericson Field and with the Vikings strangely clad in gold jerseys, was decided on a Jay Penney touchdown pass and two-point conversion with three minutes left. It also began a string of 15 consecutive playoff victories as Augustana began its march to four straight national titles. The teams met again in the 1988 playoffs with the Vikings prevailing 25-7 at home. Augustana won 19-7 at Adrian in 1994 and 35-14 at Ericson Field in 1995 before the teams renewed the series with a 21-7 Viking win at Adrian last year.
