09/10/11 - AUGUSTANA 5 ST. NORBERT 4
Late singles wins lift Vikings over St. Norbert
Following a crucial 7-2 win over Elmhurst in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin action, Augustana made it a doubly successful day on Saturday, September 10 with a 5-4 non-conference victory over St. Norbert. The match was played in Elmhurst and it came immediately after the Vikings defeated the Bluejays in a league match.
Augustana pulled off a fantastic 5-4 victory with two clutch victories by sophomore Katie Scharnagle (St. Francis College Prep HS, Lisle, Ill.) and junior Krista Panko (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) to earn the thrilling win.
The Vikings trailed 4-3 with only Panko at number three and Scharnagle at number five left on the court. Both players need to win and, although it wasn’t easy, they got the job done in almost identical fashion.
Scharnagle started it off. Following a split of sets Scharnagle got down early in the tie break by a score of 3-6 but showed she would not quit. With high efficiency and smart play she won the next three points to pull even at six. After the players traded a few points Scharnagle found herself down match point at 8-9. She brushed it off and hit a great to return to pull off the point and draw even at nine. Then she took control, winning the last two points to win the match 7-5, 3-6, (11-9).
Panko’s score was nearly the same as she won 7-6; 3-6; 10-7. With the team score tied at four, Panko entered a third set 10 point tiebreaker to decide the match. She stayed steady and jumped out to an early 6-3 lead with high percentage, high reward play. The players traded the next six points and Panko found herself with a 9-6 lead. Following a strong serve she closed into the net and sealed the win with a crushing overhead.
Doubles proved to be vital as Augustana jumped out to a 2-1 lead with wins by first doubles team of sophomore Kim Sawyer (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) and junior Meghan Wethington (Geneseo HS, Geneseo, Ill.) and the second doubles team of Brittany Reece (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) and Panko. Second doubles rolled easily with an 8-4 win while Sawyer and Wethington had an epic match. They used crushing passing shots and a high first serve percentage to stay close but found themselves down 7-8. With the Vikings on serve Wethington came up huge with several first serves as she and Sawyer came back to tie the score at eight. That brought on a decisive tie-breaker. After several back and forth points the tie-breaker was tied at five when Wethington dropped a perfect volley to pull ahead 6-5. Sawyer followed with a big first serve and sealed the victory.
Doubles started the excitement and the intensity grew as the singles matches progressed. Sawyer moved her individual singles record to 7-0 as she easily won 6-1, 6-0. However, losses at two, four and six singles left it up to the heroics of Panko and Scharnagle.
The win capped a perfect 2-0 Saturday and 4-1 week by the Vikings. The Vikings are back in action next week Saturday, September 17 when they host a double header with Cornell and Lake Forest at the Carver Courts.
