2011 Season - First half lead doesn't hold up in loss at Hope

Senior Ashley Higuchi scored her first goal of the season to give the Vikings a 2-0 lead on Friday night against Hope.

HOLLAND, Michigan - During the first 45 minutes of the non-conference match against Hope on Friday, September 9 in Holland, Michigan, it appeared that Augustana had the game in hand. That all changed in the second half as the Vikings dropped a heart-breaking 3-2 decision to the Dutch.

Augustana controlled the action early and got on the board first when junior All-American Taylor Moesle (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) scored an unassisted goal less than 15 minutes (13:40) into the game. The lead grew to 2-0 at the 25:13 mark when senior Ashley Higuchi (Smoky Hill HS, Aurora, Colo.) tallied off an assist from senior Erin Coulson (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill. – now resides in Hermosa Beach, California).

The 2-0 lead held until halftime but it didn’t take too long for Hope to cut the margin in half. Kylie Clark blasted in an unassisted goal from 40 yards out off a free kick to make it 2-1 at 50:44. Less than five minutes later (54:23) the game was tied when Alyson Epolito scored off an assist from Tricia Bajema. Epolito scored the game winner unassisted at the 81:33 mark.

Augustana held a 14-10 advantage in shots and a 3-0 edge in corner kicks. The Vikings fall to 1-2 on the year while Hope moves to 2-1.
