2011 Season - Augustana-Central Preview
![]() |
| The Vikings will be counting on senior slot receiver and kick returner A.J. Hoger as they look to pick up a win Saturday at Central. |
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - It wasn't quite the start to the Rob Cushman era that Augustana was hoping for, but the Vikings put together a solid second-half performance in an 18-13 setback to Dubuque. After falling behind 18-0 at the half, Augustana controlled the second thirty minutes, but a pair of fourth-quarter fumbles kept it from completing the comeback. The Vikings face another Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent this week as they head for Pella, Iowa to face the Central Dutch in a 1:00 p.m. contest on Saturday.
In the season opener on Thursday, September 1, Dubuque controlled the first half, putting together three separate 80-yard touchdown drives to take an 18-0 lead. Augustana turned the tables in the third quarter. The Vikings opened the period by going on an 18-play 79-yard scoring drive to cut the margin to 18-7. Junior running back Brett McWilliams (Hononegah HS, Roscoe, Ill.) capped the drive, going in from one yard out. The defense then allowed Dubuque minus two yards on the only three offensive plays the Spartans would run in the quarter. Augustana held a 13:12 to 1:48 edge in time of possession in the period.
The Vikings took over after the Spartans' three-and-out and went 38 yards in nine plays with junior running back Nate Pena (Neuqua Valley HS, Bolingbrook, Ill.) reaching the end zone on the second play of the fourth quarter. The attempt at a two-point conversion failed and the deficit remained 18-13. Augustana got the ball back four more times, but were unable to put together the winning drive.
McWilliams led the Viking ground game with 17 carries for 68 yards. Senior quarterback David Lee (Springfield HS, Springfield, Ill.) connected on 18 of 32 passes for 146 yards with one interception. Senior wide receiver Zachary McCullough (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) caught six passes for 40 yards and senior tight end Keith Abbey (Rich East HS, Park Forest, Ill.) had five grabs for 32 yards. Sophomore Erik Westerberg (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) was the leading Viking tackler with 10 total tackles on six solo stops and four assists.
This Saturday's opponent, Central, is a traditional power in the IIAC. The Dutch have won 30 conference titles, made three Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl appearances and were national champions in 1974.
Like Augustana, Central is coming off a tough season-opening loss due in large part to turnovers. The Dutch lost at Wisconsin-Oshkosh 31-28 on Saturday, September 3.
Central, led by 8th-year head coach Jeff McMartin, returns 14 starters and 37 letter winners from last season's 8-2 team that placed third in the Iowa Conference with a 6-2 record. The Dutch return five of 12 2010 All-IIAC picks, including four first-teamers, in addition to three honorable mention selections.
Nate Snead, a fifth-year senior, led the Dutch in passing and rushing last season with 1,510 yards and 12 touchdowns through the air and 642 yards and 15 touchdowns on the ground. He ranked sixth in the conference in both categories. His 215.2 yards of total offense per game ranked third in the IIAC, while his 90 points ranked second. Younger brother Jeremy Snead, a senior, led Central in receiving with 38 catches for 597 yards and seven touchdowns, ranking fourth in the IIAC in receiving yards per game and eighth in receptions per game.
Central returns two first team all-IIAC kick returners who double as wide receivers. Senior Brett Wilkin caught 18 passes for 190 yards and two touchdowns, while also averaging 19.1 yards per kick return and 8.8 yards per punt return. Senior Mike Furlong made 14 catches for 260 yards and averaged 23.6 yards per kick return and 9.4 yards per punt return to rank 64th and 54th, respectively, in Division III.
Central must replace six starters from a defense that led the IIAC by allowing only 255.5 yards per game in 2010-an average over 50 yards better than anyone else in the league-and only gave up an average of 78.7 yards on the ground. Up front, the Dutch are led by senior nose guard Brady Hill who was named second team all-IIAC in 2009 and honorable mention in 2010. Linebacker Keith Rush was an honorable mention all-league pick. Cornerback Jake Peterson and Ryan Schmidt earned first team and second team All-IIAC honors, respectively.
CENTRAL SERIES RECORD: These two programs, with eight Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl appearances and five NCAA Division III championships between them, have met nine times, with the Dutch holding a 5-4 edge. Central got a 13-0 win in the first meeting in 1930 and the teams would not play again for 54 years. The second meeting occurred in the 1984 Stagg Bowl in Kings Island, Ohio, where the Vikings captured their second straight national title with a 21-12 win. In 1985 the teams met in the Division III semifinals and Augustana posted a 14-7 win at Rock Island Public Schools Stadium on the way to its third of four consecutive national championships. Central got a measure of revenge with a 23-17 double overtime win in the 1988 semifinals. The Vikings and Dutch have met five times since 2002, with Central winning three times, including a 28-23 win at Ericson Field last year.
