2011-12 Season - Miedema picks up first coaching victory

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Augustana was perfect on the scoreboard on Labor Day with a 9-0 win against Loras on Monday morning, September 5 at the Carver Courts. It was the first coaching victory at Augustana for rookie head coach Jon Miedema.
The Vikings second doubles team of junior Krista Panko (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) and senior captain Brittany Reece (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) cruised to an 8-1 win with punishing groundstrokes and ferocious net play, consistently pressing Loras back. Accompanying them in the victory column was the third doubles team of freshman Chelsea Lavin (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) and Caitee Margenthaler (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.). Lavin and Margenthaler breezed to an easy 8-1 victory because solid approach shots and finishing volleys. The first doubles team of sophomore Kim Sawyer (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) and junior Meghan Wethington (Geneseo HS, Geneseo, Ill.) had a rocky start, getting their serve broken and falling behind 3-4 before reeling off five straight games to win 8-4.
In singles the momentum continued for the Vikings as they jumped out to early leads in all six matches and kept the pressure on in the second sets, winning five of the six matches in straight sets. Wethington, at number three singles, fought off a tough second set defeat and won the third set tie-breaker to cap the 9-0 Blue and Gold win.
The Vikings continued their stellar play in the second match of the day as they defeated College Conference of Illinois Wisconsin opponent Milikin 9-0. The Vikings first doubles team of junior Krista Panko (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) and senior Brittany Reece (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) won by a score of 8-6. Reece/Panko fought their way back from a 4-5 deficit with a high first serve percentage and wise attacking strategy. The second doubles team of Emily Kaczmarek (Glenbard South HS, Lombard, Ill.) and Katie Scharnagle (St.Francis College Prep HS, Lisle, Ill.) used great angle volleys to easily seal their match 8-1.
From that point on the team cruised through singles. Using a combination of high consistency and stellar finishing shots the Vikings won easily in all spots. Kim Sawyer (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) defeated Kendall Robison 6-2, 6-1 while Brittany Reece (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) at number two, Meghan Wethington (Geneseo HS, Geneseo, Ill.) at number three, and sophomore Mariah Bardo (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) at number four all won in straight sets without dropping a game.
