2011 Season - Vikings move to 2-0 with whitewash of Cornell

John McSpadden (18), Grant Halter (14) and Sean Fidlow (15) each scored goals and Nick Wolfe (17) had an assist as the Vikings defeated Cornell 3-0 in the first men's game ever at Thorson-Lucken Field.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill.-Augustana's men's soccer team got its second shutout in as many days Sunday, blanking Cornell 3-0 in its first game ever at Thorson-Lucken Field. The Vikings improve to 2-0 on the 2011 season, while Cornell falls to 0-3 this year.

Sophomore John McSpadden (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) scored the Augustana men's first goal at the school's new facility, putting the hosts up 1-0 on a feed from Matt Shipon (South Elgin HS, Elgin, Ill.) in the 23rd minute. Less than a minute later, Nick Wolfe (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) and Grant Halter (Glenbard West HS, Glen Ellyn, Ill.) teamed up to extend the lead to 2-0. Halter found the net for his first goal of the season with Wolfe getting the assist.

After going the distance for a shutout at Grinnell Saturday, Viking goalkeeper Tyler Cowherd (Bettendorf HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) got the second half off against the Rams. He recorded Augustana's only save of the day. Freshman Brett Johnson (Zion-Benton HS, Beach Park, Ill.) and sophomore Steve Zahrobsky (Downers Grove South HS, Woodridge, Ill.) split the second half in goal.

In the 74th minute, Cornell fouled Sean Fidlow (Carmel Catholic HS, Gurnee, Ill.) in the box. The senior buried the penalty kick in the right side of the net to complete the day's scoring. It was Fidlow's second goal of the young season.

The Vikings held considerable advantages in shots (28 to six), shots on goal (15 to one) and corner kicks (12 to three).

Coach Brenton Joseph's crew will attempt to keep its streak going in Moorhead, Minnesota this weekend. The Vikings face St. Scholastica on Saturday, September 10 at 3:00 p.m. and Division II Minnesota-Moorhead on Sunday, September 11 at noon.
