2011 Season - Dubuque Preview
![]() |
| Junior linebacker Joe Weber returns after leading the Vikings in sacks and tackles-for-loss a year ago. Augustana hosts Dubuque in the season-opener on Thursday, September 1. |
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Thursday, September 1 will mark the official start of the Rob Cushman era at Augustana. The Vikings will take on the Spartans of the University of Dubuque in a 7:00 p.m. contest at Ericson Field.
Cushman was named the Viking head coach in November 2010, taking over for long-time Augustana head man Jim Barnes. Cushman served on Barnes' staff as defensive coordinator for the past three years, with his units consistently ranking near the top of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin statistically. He takes over a Viking program that finished 6-4 overall in 2010 and in a third-place tie in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin at 4-3. Augustana will also have new coordinators on both sides of the ball. Zac Connors will take over the reins of the Viking offense, while Kyle Reade and Justin Rich will replace Cushman, sharing the role of co-defensive coordinator.
The Vikings return 11 starters and 44 letter winners, led by senior quarterback David Lee (Springfield HS, Springfield, Ill.). Lee, who'll serve as a team captain along with senior linebacker Cody Wickenhauser (Tri-Valley HS, Downs, Ill.), broke Ken Anderson's season records for passing yards (2,411), pass attempts (317), and total offense (2,655) last year. Lee also broke his own school marks for single-season pass completions (195) and single-game passing yards (429 vs. Carthage) and tied his own record for single-game completions (28 vs. Carthage and Central). Entering his senior season, the 2010 second team All-CCIW selection is within striking distance of several of Anderson's career records. He trails the 1981 NFL MVP by 1,990 passing yards and 1,984 yards of total offense, as well as 74 pass completions, 270 pass attempts and 20 touchdown passes.
Joining Lee as returning starters on offense will be seniors Zachary McCullough (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.), Kelly Clennon (Joliet Catholic HS, Naperville, Ill.) and Jack Gilleland (Marian Central HS, McHenry, Ill.). McCullough, a wide receiver, was Lee's top big-play threat a year ago, snaring 29 passes for team-highs of 668 yards (23.0 yards per reception) and seven touchdowns. Clennon, a fifth-year senior, will anchor the Viking offensive line at either guard or center. Gilleland, who had 14 receptions for 125 yards and a touchdown last year, leads a corps of Augustana tight ends.
Defensively, Wickenhauser returns from a season-ending injury last year along with fellow seniors Mitch McGilliard (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.), Shane Holl (Batavia HS, North Aurora, Ill.), Danny Hess (Naperville North HS, Naperville, Ill.), Ben Hall (University HS, Normal, Ill.) and Matt Glawe (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Winfield, Ill.). Junior linebackers Joe Weber (Marmion Academy, South Elgin, Ill.) and Andrew O'Reilly (Driscoll Catholic HS, Elgin, Ill.) are also returning starters. Weber led Augustana in sacks (10) and tackles-for-loss (16) last year and was third in total tackles with 56. Glawe and Hess were fourth and fifth on the team with 49 and 48 total tackles, respectively. Free safety Hall led the Vikings with four interceptions a year ago, including a school record-tying three against Central.
Augustana's opponent on opening night, Dubuque, returns 16 starters from last year's 4-6 team, which finished sixth in the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a 3-5 record. Third-year head coach Stan Zweifel welcomes back 10 offensive starters, led by his son Michael. The younger Zweifel led the nation in receiving yards per game in 2009 with an average of 152.2. He returns this year after his senior season was ended by injury after four games in 2010. He had 36 receptions for 512 yards before the injury. Second team All-IIAC selection Demacus Fleming, who led the Spartans in receiving with 52 catches for 860 yards and seven touchdowns, also returns. Quarterback Wyatt Hanus, who completed 63.5 percent of his passes for 1,622 yards and eight touchdowns, is back, as is leading rusher Justin Spaulding (782 yards and seven touchdowns), a two-time All-IIAC honoree.
Six starters return from a Spartan defense that allowed 21.6 points and 329.2 total yards per game in 2010. The leading returnees are middle linebacker Trevor Runkle, a second team All-IIAC pick, and defensive lineman Stephen Vassalotti, who earned honorable mention. Runkle was in on 65 tackles a year ago and Vassalotti 49, including a team-high nine for loss.
NEW LOGO UNVEILING: September 1 will also mark the official debut of a new Augustana Viking logo. The school will unveil the new logo in a ceremony led by President Steven Bahls on the patio of Carlsson Evald Hall at 12 noon. In the event of inclement weather, the event will be held in the Great Hall of Evald.
HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ADMITTED FREE OF CHARGE: For the September 1 season-opener against Dubuque, all high school students with a valid ID card will be admitted at no charge.
