2011-12 Season - Vikings go 18-5 at Fun Doubles Scrimmage

Senior Alyssa Quitschau teamed with fellow senior Julie Wach to capture the "C" division at the Fun Doubles Scrimmage in Waterloo, Iowa on Saturday, August 20.

Augustana opened the Jon Miedema Era in women’s tennis with a solid performance at the Fun Doubles Scrimmage in Waterloo, Iowa on Saturday, August 20. Although no team scores were kept in the meet, the Vikings ended up with a sterling 18-5 overall record in the competition. Doubles teams from Loras, Central of Iowa and St. Ambrose competed in the season-opening event.

Seniors Julie Wach (Marist HS, Chicago, Ill.) and Alyssa Quitschau (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) won the “C” flight, breezing to a 4-0 record. Wach and Quitschau only lost a total of five games throughout the day.

In the “A” flight, the number one doubles team of sophomore Kim Sawyer (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) and junior Meghan Wethington (Geneseo HS, Geneseo, Ill.) shook off a tough 8-6 loss in the quarterfinals and responded with wins over Central of Iowa and St. Ambrose.

Senior captain Brittany Reece (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) and junior Krista Panko (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) also suffered an early loss but responded with wins over Loras, Central of Iowa and St. Ambrose.

The number three doubles team of sophomore Emily Kaczmarek (Glenbard South HS, Lombard, Ill.) and freshman Chelsea Lavin (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) marched all the way to the finals before losing in the championship match.

This was the first action for the Vikings under the tutelage of Miedema, who replaced Adam Strand in June.

Augustana will open the 2011 season on Saturday with a double header at home against Illinois Wesleyan and Grinnell. The College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin match with Illinois Wesleyan will start at 9:00 a.m. and the Grinnell contest is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
