Longfellow Elementary honored Lou Belby at their Volunteer Recognition Night with the Mike Nolan Award for Volunteerism and Dedication on May 19, 2011.
Paul Croll presented his paper "Making Sense of Whiteness: From Invisibility to Colorblindness" at the American Sociological Association Annual Meeting in Las Vegas.
Greg Domski's research proposal entitled "Functionalized, Binuclear N-Heterocyclic Carbene Ligands Bearing Phosphine Donors: Synthesis of Metal Complexes and Applications to Homogeneous Catalysis" was awarded funding through the American Chemical Society's Petroleum Research Fund Undergraduate New Investigator grant program. The awarded amount is $50,000 covering the period from September 2011 through August 2013. These funds will be used to support two student researchers during both Summer 2012 and 2013 and to purchase supplies and equipment necessary to conduct the proposed research.
Special Collections Librarians Sarah Horowitz and Jamie Nelson judged junior and senior high school history projects at the Illinois State History Expo on May 5, 2011 in Springfield, IL. The Expo is the state level competition of National History Day. It was an exciting opportunity to provide guidance to aspiring historians and assist them in their analysis of primary sources.
Special Collections Librarian Sarah Horowitz presented the talk "Picturing History: Using a Photograph to Introduce Historical Research" at the annual Rare Books and Manuscripts Section (RBMS) of the Association of College and Research Libraries conference in Baton Rouge, LA on June 23, 2011. The presentation was part of the session "Pecha Kucha with Our Stuff: Teaching with Rare Books, Manuscripts, Archives, and Special Collections." Sarah discussed an exercise with a historical photo which she uses to introduce students to research in special collections.
During July and August, Dara Wegman-Geedey reviewed articles for the Journal of Microbiology and Biology Education, a publication of the American Society for Microbiology. Dara has been an ad hoc reviewer for ASM journals since 2006.
