The College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin football coaches have picked North Central as the favorite to win the league in 2011. The five-time defending champion Cardinals received 48 points and six first-place votes. Augustana, led by first-year head coach Rob Cushman, was pegged for fifth in the pre-season grid poll.

Cushman, who spent three seasons as Augustana's defensive coordinator prior to being named head coach in November, brings back 46 letter winners and 11 starters from last year's team, which finished 6-4 overall and in a third-place tie in the CCIW at 4-3. Quarterback David Lee (Springfield HS, Springfield, Ill.) was a second team All-CCIW selection in 2010. He already owns most of the school's single season and single game passing and total offense records and enters his senior season within striking distance of all of Ken Anderson's career records. Lee will serve as a team captain along with senior linebacker Cody Wickenhauser (Tri-Valley HS, Downs, Ill.) .

Wheaton was picked to finish second in the CCIW, receiving 44 points and two first-place votes. Illinois Wesleyan, with 33 points, held down the third spot. Elmhurst's 31 points put them fourth, followed by Augustana (28 points), Carthage (20), Millikin (13) and North Park (seven).

The Vikings open the 2011 season on Thursday, September 1, hosting Dubuque in a 7:00 p.m. contest at Ericson Field.
