2011 Season - CCIW coaches pick Vikings for sixth

A year ago Augustana was picked to finish sixth in the CCIW in men's soccer and ended up fourth with a 4-3 league mark. Head coach Brenton Joseph is hoping to fool the "experts" again as the Vikings have once again been tabbed for sixth in the conference standings.

The College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin has release its pre-season coaches’ poll for men’s soccer with coach Brenton Joseph’s Augustana squad picked for sixth place. Defending regular season champion Wheaton and 2010 CCIW tournament champ North Park were selected as co-favorites, with each getting 45 points and four first-place votes in the poll.

Carthage received 34 points to finish third. Elmhurst and Illinois Wesleyan tied for the fourth spot with 30 points each. Augustana’s 19 points put it in the sixth spot, followed by North Central (13) and Millikin (8).

Joseph welcomes back 17 letter winners and nine starters this season—his fifth at Augustana. The Vikings were 8-11-1 a year ago, but finished 4-3 in the CCIW, good for fourth place and a berth in the conference tournament. Seniors Sean Fidlow (Carmel HS, Gurnee, Ill.) and Cory DeGrave (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.) are among the returnees. The midfielder and defender, respectively, were the Vikings’ offensive and defensive Players of the Year in 2010 and Fidlow earned second team All-CCIW recognition.

The Vikings open the 2011 season at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 3 at Grinnell. The next day at 3:30 p.m. they’ll host Cornell in the first ever men’s game at Augustana’s Thorson-Lucken Field.
