2011 Season - CCIW volleyball coaches' poll released

The 2011 edition of the Augustana volleyball team is hoping for a repeat of last year when the Vikings were picked to finish seventh in the CCIW and ended up fourth. This year, second year head coach Jamie Walters' team is once again pegged for seventh in the CCIW in the pre-season coaches' poll.

The volleyball coaches in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin have tabbed Augustana for a seventh-place finish in 2011. The Vikings, led by second-year head coach Jamie Walters, received 17 votes in the league’s pre-season poll. Carthage, which had had a streak of six straight conference championships snapped last year, was picked as the league favorite with 47 points. Defending regular season champ Millikin was second with 40 points.

Augustana finished fourth in the CCIW in 2010 with a 4-3 mark in Walters’ first season. The Vikings went 12-20 overall and return eight letter winners, including tri-captains Brianna Skeens (Vernon Hills HS, Libertyville, Ill.), Kelsey Mikula (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.) and Sarah Williams (Rockford Lutheran HS, Loves Park, Ill.). Walters augmented the returnees by bringing in a large freshman class.

Carthage, which won the 2010 CCIW tournament and the conference’s automatic NCAA tournament berth, garnered five first-place votes in the poll and Millikin one. Elmhurst, who was picked for third place with 39 points, got the other two first-place nods. Illinois Wesleyan and North Central tied for fourth with 28 points and Wheaton was pegged for sixth place with 18 points—one more that Augustana. North Park, with seven points, finished eighth in the poll.
