ROCK ISLAND, Ill.- Augustana pitcher John Peters (Alleman HS, Milan, Ill.) has signed a free-agent contract with the Washington Nationals organization. Peters, who went 4-1 with a 3.47 ERA this season for a 28-12 Viking squad, signed Wednesday morning and expects to make his professional debut this weekend with the Nationals' Gulf Coast League affiliate in Viera, Florida.
"This is something every player works for. I'm really excited about the opportunity," said Peters, a 6' 3", 210-pound right-hander.
Peters enjoyed a fine junior season for the Vikings in 2011. He made 12 appearances and completed two of five starting assignments, including a two-hit shutout of Monmouth on April 11. That performance started a 17 1/3 scoreless inning streak for Peters, who compiled a 1.34 ERA over 33 2/3 innings in his final six appearances of the year. On the season, he threw 46 2/3 innings, allowing 37 hits and an opponents' batting average of just .218. He struck out 23 and walked 17. As a sophomore in 2010, he went 3-2 with a 4.78 ERA.
Peters has been competing at the semi-pro level this summer with the Quad City 76ers, sporting a 4-1 record with one save and a team-best 0.51 ERA. He allowed 19 hits in 35 innings, walking five and fanning a team-high 32.
