2011 Season - Vikings in 10 events at NCAA meet

Junior Phil Christensen will be shooting for his third All-American certificate in as many years at the NCAA Division III men's national track & field championship this week in Delaware, Ohio.

Augustana will be well represented at the NCAA Division III national track & field meet at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio with participants in 10 events. The meet will begin on Thursday, May 26 and conclude on Saturday, May 28.

The Vikings have been the number one ranked team in the NCAA Division III dual meet rankings for the last five weeks and veteran head coach Paul Olsen’s team met the national qualifying standard in a total of 17 events throughout the season.

Headlining the Augustana contingent will be sophomore sprinter Alex Rindone (Marmion Academy, Geneva, Ill.). Rindone qualified in three individual events (100, 200 and 400) and runs on both relay teams (400 and 1600) that have qualified. He ran :10.64 in the 100 at the Meet of Champions on April 16 and scorched a school record :21.21 in the 200 at the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin championship in the preliminary round on Friday, May 6. Just last Friday, May 20, he ripped off a :47.96 in the 400 at the Twilight Qualifier. That is the second fastest 400 in school history and it was the first open 400 of Rindone’s collegiate career. However, he will not run that event at the national meet because of the time schedule.

He anchors the 400 relay with freshman Jay Graffagna (Geneva HS, LaFox, Ill,), sophomore Greg Patton (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) and senior James Wood (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.). That unit has a best time of :41.30 recorded at the CCIW championship on May 7. The 1600 relay of sophomore Dan Doubet (Galesburg HS, Galesburg, Ill.), Rindone, Wood and Patton clocked a time of 3:13.88 in winning the CCIW title on May 7.

Patton will also compete in the open 400 with his time of :48.21, which he turned in at the Twilight Qualifier on Friday, May 20.

Senior Alex Stake (Williamsville HS, Sherman, Ill.) will take his talents into the decathlon, which starts on Thursday, May 26. He piled up 6,253 points in winning the CCIW title on May 6-7. Phil Christensen has earned All-American honors in each of the last two NCAA meets in the discus and he will compete in that event once again. His best throw this year is 172’ 0” from winning the CCIW title on May 7. He was sixth in the national meet as a freshman and third last year.

Senior Patrick Zeunik (Bloomington Central Catholic HS, Bloomington, Ill.) is a three time All-American in the triple jump and is coming off a second place performance at the NCAA indoor championship back in March. His best jump during the outdoor season is a 49’ 6 ½” from the Wartburg Select Invitational on April 2 in Waverly, Iowa.

Freshman Nick Sinon (Kaneland HS, Elburn, Ill.) will compete in the high jump after clearing 6’ 9” at the Twilight Qualifier at Paul V. Olsen Track last Friday night (May 20). Junior Adam Myers (Dixon HS, Dixon, Ill.) made the field in the hammer throw after uncorking a toss of 185’5” at the Twilight Qualifier on May 20.

The Vikings also met the NCAA Division III qualifying standard in six other events but those athletes did not make the final cut for the national meet. Christensen qualified in the hammer throw with a heave of 174’ 2” at the CCIW meet on Friday, May 6. Two pole vaulters cleared the qualifying height during the season. Sophomore Colton Van Kirk (Rochelle HS, Rochelle, Ill.) went 15’ 7 ¾” at the CCIW meet on May 6 and senior Eric Chalus (Rochelle HS, Rochelle, Ill.) cleared 15’ 5” at the Twilight Qualifier on May 20.

Junior Greg Davis (Carlinville HS, Carlinville, Ill.) qualified in the 110 high hurdles with a time of :14.85 at the Western Illinois Invitational on April 9 in Macomb, Illinois. Wood was under the standard in the 400 with his time of :48.48 at the CCIW meet. Sophomore Brian Pollastrini (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) ran 31:00.04 in the 10,000 at the Meet of Champions on April 16 at Paul V. Olsen Track.
