2011 Season - Vikings on top for fourth straight week

For the fourth straight week the Augustana Vikings hold the top spot in the NCAA Division III Track & Field Team Dual Meet Rankings. In their most competitive meet to date, the Vikings showed why they are considered a top team with some outstanding performances across the board. Head Coach Paul Olsen's squad finished second in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin conference meet, but still managed to fend off all challengers for the top spot in the national poll. The Vikings increased their point total to 222.52, up from 214.95 last week. This poll is conducted by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
CCIW champion North Central jumped into the number two spot 221.09 points and Wisconsin-Oshkosh, a Midwest region rival, is third with 217.30 points. Whitworth (214.33.27) fell to fourth, while Williams also moved down, now in fifth with 212.86 points. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (209.33) is currently sixth, followed by Wisconsin-Whitewater (206.65), Wabash (204.97), Nebraska Wesleyan (204.43) and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (204.19) rounding out the top ten.
Augustana hosted the CCIW conference championship last weekend and had many of its top performances of the year. In all, the Vikings walked away with eight individual and two relay championships, and 13 NCAA qualifiers. Before that, the Blue & Gold had competed in eight meets. The Vikings won their dual meet with St. Ambrose by a score of 154-54 on March 19 in Rock Island, Illinois and finished first in the Viking Olympics on March 26. On Saturday, April 2, Augustana finished second at the Wartburg Select meet in Waverly, Iowa. On April 9, at the Lee Calhoun Invitational, Augustana finished second of 16. Augustana won the Meet of Champions, contested in rain, snow and cold temperatures, on Saturday, April 16 with 191.5 points. On April 22 at the Dubuque Open, the Vikings won 11 events and had place winners in every event, though no team scores were kept. April 29-30 saw the Vikings compete at the Drake Relays and the Loras Invitational, but neither event kept team scores.
The Vikings will travel to Naperville, Illinois to compete in the Dr. Keeler Invitational on the campus of North Central on Thursday May 12 th and Friday May 13 th .
