2011 Season - Watson, Nelson make all-conference team

Melissa Nelson was one of two Augustana players named to the first team of the 2011 CCIW all-conference softball team.

Two Augustana softball players were named to the all-conference team in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin, it was announced today. Senior Melissa Nelson (West Aurora HS, Aurora, Ill.) and freshman Krista Watson (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.) were both named to the first team. Nelson was an at-large selection while Watson made the team at shortstop.

Nelson hit .336 with 37 hits in 110 at-bats with 24 runs scored, nine doubles, four triples, three home runs and 20 RBI. Her four triples is the seventh highest single season total in school history. She finished her career ranked in Augustana’s top 10 in seven offensive categories. Her 33 doubles are third all-time. She’s fourth in career RBI (96), fifth in home runs (14) and at-bats (497), tied for seventh in triples (eight) and ninth in hits (156) and her 89 runs scored place her ninth on the career list. She was a second team all-conference selection as an outfielder in 2008 as a freshman and 2010 as a senior.

Watson was second on the Vikings in batting average at .377 and led the team in home runs (nine) and runs-batted-in (25). She had 40 hits in 106 at-bats with 29 runs scored, seven doubles, four base-on-balls and four stolen bases. Her nine home runs are tied for fourth on the Vikings’ single season list.

Augustana, under the direction of veteran head coach Kris Kistler, finished the year with a 19-19 overall record and was 5-9 in the CCIW.
