Dr. Stephen Warren
Professor of History
"Service learning and experiential learning allow students to improve their critical thinking skills by testing their ideas about themselves and their understanding of the world among people from different walks of life," says Dr. Stephen Warren. The professor of history tries to immerse Augustana students in learning about various cultures, especially American Indians. Each summer he travels to Oklahoma for an American Indian field study course in which students produce historical research requested by both tribes.
Warren believes American Indian history has been recently transformed by the involvement of scholars and communities in academic research. He explains, "the beauty, and the challenge of historical research on American Indians is that historical problems are never safely historical. Past and present are intertwined."
Author of the book The Shawnees and Their Neighbors, 1795-1870, Warren has also published a number of articles on American Indians in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. He is proudest of his work with the Miami and Absentee Shawnee tribes, for whom he is a historical consultant.
