DECATUR, Ill.- Dave Hoffman (Cary-Grove HS, Fox River Grove, Ill.) went 3-for-4 with a double, two homers, four runs scored and six RBI Sunday to lead Augustana to a 17-5 win at Millikin Sunday. Hoffman got plenty of offensive help as Kurt Schmidt (Grayslake Central HS, Grayslake, Ill.) had a huge day, going 5-for-5 with five runs scored and Jeremy Juhl (Glenbard East HS, Lombard, Ill.) went 4-for-5 as well.
The Vikings jumped in front 2-0 in the top of the first. Juhl singled, stole second and scored on a Hoffman groundout. Schmidt singled and eventually scored on a wild pitch by Big Blue starter Josh Schultz. The hosts came right back to take a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the frame when Sean Ryan touched Viking starter Brian Konecke (Lakes Community HS, Itasca, Ill.) for a three-run homer.
After the Vikings went down in order in the top of the second, Millikin got three consecutive singles to start the bottom of the inning, but Konecke escaped unscathed by retiring the next three Big Blue batters, including two on strikes.
Augustana struck for four runs in the third and added six in the fourth. Pat Wilson's (Stevenson HS, Vernon Hills, Ill.) two-run double was the big hit in the third and Anthony Concialdi (Fremd HS, Barrington, Ill.) had an RBI triple and Hoffman an RBI double in the fourth.
Hoffman's two-run homer in the fifth pushed the lead to 14-4 and after Millikin got a run off reliever Josiah Martin (Canton HS, Canton, Ill.) in the sixth, Augustana added three in the seventh on Schmidt's RBI double and Hoffman's second two-run blast of the game.
Vince Frede (St. Charles East HS, St. Charles, Ill.) came in for the Vikings and threw a scoreless seventh to wrap things up and end the contest by the mercy rule.
In addition to Hoffman, Schmidt and Juhl's multi-hit games, Wilson drove in three runs and Jared McIntosh (Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) a pair. Augustana had a total of 16 hits.
Martin allowed just one hit and one run in three innings and picked up his third win of the year against only one loss.
The Vikings are 28-11 on the year and 12-8 in CCIW play pending the outcome of a possible make-up date with North Park.
