Tracey Kuehl '78
Executive Director of the Family Mueseum of Arts and Science
As a biology major, 1978 Augustana graduate Tracey Kuehl didn't imagine she'd end up executive director of the Family Museum of Arts and Science in Bettendorf. But when her first post-college job, at the City of Davenport's sewage treatment plant, didn't fulfill her career aspirations, she headed in a new direction. "I realized I wanted more interaction with people…and there sure wasn't much of that at the treatment plant," Kuehl says.
While working part-time at a jewelry store, Kuehl took classes at the Quad Cities Graduate Studies Center. When an opening came up in marketing/advertising for the mall, she jumped at the opportunity and landed the job. This provided her with a background in administrative and communication skills necessary to join the Family Museum in 1991.
Kuehl believes her motivation and strength to make a drastic career change was inspired by her education at Augustana. "The liberal arts emphasis instills in you the desire and ability to look above and beyond your primary discipline," Kuehl says. "That philosophy of discovery propelled me into many of the things I've done since graduation."
