2011 Season - Vikings get 12-6 win on Senior Day
|Mike Lamb blasted a three run homer and drove in four runs Sunday as Augustana defeated North Central 12-6 on Senior Day at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field.|
MOLINE, Ill.- Mike Lamb (Ottawa HS, Ottawa, Ill.) provided the highlight of Senior Day Sunday with a fourth inning, three-run home run and Augustana went on to post a 12-6 win over North Central at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field. The Vikings improve to 21-11 on the year and 9-8 in CCIW play. The Cardinals are now 19-9 overall and 13-5 in the league.
Lamb's blow came on the heels of a three-run North Central fourth that saw the Cardinals cut what had been a 7-2 Viking lead to 7-5. Pat Wilson (Stevenson HS, Vernon Hills, Ill.) and Jared McIntosh (Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) started the Augustana fourth with back-to-back walks off North Central reliever T.J. Hecimovich. Hecimovich looked like he would get out of the inning when he retired the next two Vikings, but freshman Jacob VanDuyne (Wilmington HS, Wilmington, Ill.) came up with a big two-out RBI single to push the lead to 8-5 and set the stage for Lamb. The senior right fielder launched a Hecimovich offering over the right field fence to give Augustana an 11-5 advantage.
The Vikings jumped in front in the contest with a six-run second inning. After the Cardinals touched Augustana starter Brian Konecke (Lakes Community HS, Itasca, Ill.) for a pair of runs in the top of the first, the Vikings left two runners stranded in the bottom of the frame. However, in the second inning, another of the seniors, T.J. O'Donnell (New Trier HS, Northbrook, Ill.) started things off by grounding a first-pitch single through the left side against Cardinal starter Michael McGrath. Mike Barker (Centennial, Colo. Grandview HS, Marina Del Rey, Cal.) followed and also jumped on the first pitch to single to center. On the next pitch, VanDuyne dropped a beautiful bunt down the third base line to load the bases. Lamb got the Vikings on the board with a sacrifice fly to center and Jeremy Juhl (Glenbard East HS, Lombard, Ill.) put them ahead 3-2 with a two-run double to left. After an infield hit by Joe Cecchi (Romeoville HS, Romeoville, Ill.) and a walk to Dave Hoffman (Cary-Grove HS, Fox River Grove, Ill.), Wilson capped the inning with a three-run double to right center.
Juhl scored on a wild pitch in the third to extend the lead to 7-2 before the North Central scored three in the top of the fourth. The Cardinals did all of their damage after two were out in the inning. Matt Burke's two-run double to left was the big hit.
After Lamb's blast gave him some breathing room, the freshman Konecke settled in and held the visitors hitless through the rest of his seven-inning stint. He retired 10 of the last 11 Cardinals he faced including the final eight in a row.
Wilson drove in Augustana's final run, his fourth RBI of the day, with a double down the right field line in the fifth.
Senior Vince Frede (St. Charles East HS, St. Charles, Ill.) came on for Konecke to start the eighth inning and closed the Cardinals out over the final two innings, allowing a run on two hits.
Konecke got the win to move to 2-1 on the year. He allowed four earned runs on seven hits while walking four and fanning five. Juhl and Cecchi, batting first and second in the Viking order, each went 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Juhl also drove in a pair. Wilson and Lamb each drove in four runs.
Next up for Augustana is a Tuesday, May 3 doubleheader against Knox at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field. Both games are scheduled for seven innings and first pitch is slated for 6:00 p.m.
