2011 Season - Vikings drop a pair at North Central

Junior John Peters went seven strong innings in game two Saturday, but took a tough luck 5-1 loss at North Central. The Cardinals also took game one by a score of 11-1.

NAPERVILLE, Ill.- North Central put game one away with a six-run seventh inning and got a three-hitter from Nate Arenson in game two, sweeping a doubleheader from Augustana Saturday afternoon by scores of 11-1 and 5-1. The Vikings are now 20-11 on the year and 8-8 in the CCIW.

Game One: North Central 11, Augustana 1

Augustana's Mike Trotta (Notre Dame HS, Chicago, Ill.) and North Central starter Jon Rashid each silenced the opposing bats early. Mike Barker (Centennial, Colo. Grandview HS, Marina Del Rey, Cal.), who had a third inning leadoff single for the Vikings, was the only base runner for either team through three innings.

The top of the Cardinals' order got the scoring started in the bottom of the fourth. Consecutive singles from Dan Scott, Matt Burke, Matt Abraham and Michael Corrigan put the game's first run on the board. Joe Turek followed with a bases loaded walk and Brennan Hagensee singled to right to make it 3-0. Trotta avoided further damage in the inning by retiring three straight North Central batters with the bases loaded, including the last two on strikes.

Jared McIntosh (Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) and Jacob VanDuyne (Wilmington HS, Wilmington, Ill.) each reached on bunt singles in the top of the fifth, but the Vikings were unable to plate either of them.

North Central got to Trotta for single runs in the fifth and sixth, doing all of the damage in both innings after two were out. In the fifth, Abraham singled through the right side and Corrigan and Turek followed with walks. Abraham scored on a ball four wild pitch to Turek. In the sixth, Alex Khoury doubled to left and Scott scored him with a single to right to extend the hosts' lead to 5-0.

Augustana finally got to Rashid for a run in the seventh. T.J. O'Donnell (New Trier HS, Northbrook, Ill.) got a one-out single to left and eventually came home on a wild pitch. The Vikings left two runners stranded in the inning though.

North Central ended the game by the mercy rule with six runs off four Viking pitchers in the bottom of the seventh. Abraham's single to right center scored Scott with the final run.

Trotta fell to 5-2 with the loss. He went six-plus innings, allowing seven runs on nine hits while walking five and fanning five. Rashid scattered seven hits to get the complete game victory. McIntosh had Augustana's only multi-hit game, getting a pair of singles.

Game Two: North Central 5, Augustana 1

Arenson fired a three-hitter in game two to lead North Central to the sweep. His performance outdid a strong seven-inning effort by Augustana starter John Peters (Alleman HS, Milan, Ill.).

North Central took a 3-0 lead in the third, taking advantage of two Viking errors to score three unearned runs with the aid of just one hit.

Augustana got an unearned run of its own in the seventh. McIntosh lined a two-out double to left center. After Barker was hit by a pitch, VanDuyne reached on an error by Cardinal center fielder Tom Ross, with McIntosh coming around to score and cut the lead to 3-1.

North Central extended the lead to 5-1 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth. Scott got a leadoff single to knock out Peters and Burke singled him to third against reliever Josiah Martin (Canton HS, Canton, Ill.). Abraham then doubled down the left field line to bring home both runners. Scott's run was the first earned run off Peters in the game and just the third he's allowed in his last 24 1/3 innings.

Arenson set the Vikings down in order in the ninth to pick up the complete game win. Peters suffered his first loss of the season after three wins. He allowed just four hits and one earned run. He walked one and fanned a pair.

The teams meet in a single game tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field.
