2011 Season - Augustana swept at North Central

Junior first baseman Christina Trojanowski had four hits on Saturday, including three in the opener, but it wasn't enough to keep the Vikings from being swept 4-3 and 12-3 at North Central.

NAPERVILLE, Ill.-Clutch hitting by North Central, along with some defensive struggles by the Vikings, led to a doubleheader sweep by the Cardinals Saturday afternoon. A two-out solo home run in the sixth inning gave North Central a 4-3 win in the opener and an eight-run fourth inning in the nightcap help the Cardinals roll to a 12-3 win. Augustana is now 17-19 on the year and finishes CCIW play with a 5-9 record.

Game One: North Central 4, Augustana 3

Difficulties in the field cost the Vikings in Saturday's opener. Augustana committed four errors, including two in a two-run North Central fourth inning that tied the score at 3-3. Cardinal pitcher Vlasta Mangia provided the winning run with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth.

Christina Trojanowski (Evergreen Park HS, Evergreen Park, Ill.) led off the game with an infield hit off Mangia. One out later, senior Melissa Nelson (West Aurora HS, Aurora, Ill.) gave the Vikings the lead with her third home run of the season, a two-run blast to left.

The Cardinals cut the lead in half in the bottom of the first off Sarah Hintz (Leroy HS, Leroy, Ill.). Laura Whitfield's two-out single to left scored Colleen Drennan to make it 2-1.

Krista Watson (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.) led off the Viking fourth with a double to right center and Stephanie Sarb (Lisle HS, Lisle, Ill.) singled her home to give Augustana a 3-1 lead, but the Cardinals took advantage of the Vikings' third and fourth errors of the game to even the score at 3-3 with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the inning.

Mangia helped her own cause in a big way in the bottom of the sixth, connecting on a two-out solo homer to left off Viking reliever Courtney Ledezma (Untied Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) to give the Cardinals a 4-3 lead. She then closed things out in the top of the seventh, allowing just a two-out single to Trojanowski before finishing off the Vikings for the complete game victory.

Hintz scattered seven hits in five innings. She walked no one and struck out two. Just one of the three runs she allowed was earned. Ledezma took the loss, falling to 0-2 on the year. Trojanowski had three of the Vikings' eight hits.

Game Two: North Central 12, Augustana 3

Things started out well for the Vikings in game two. Chaney Tambling (Dwight HS, Dwight, Ill.) gave Augustana a 2-0 lead with a two-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the second. The lead would be short-lived, however, as the Cardinals knocked out Viking starter Ashley Yaros (Stagg HS, Palos Hills, Ill.) with a four-run third.

The runs kept coming in the fourth as North Central took advantage of two more Viking defensive miscues to score three runs off Viking reliever Rachel Perry (Illinois Valley Central HS, Chillicothe, Ill.) and five more off Hintz. Just one of the eight runs in the frame was earned.

Watson connected on a solo homer, her seventh of the season, in the bottom of the fourth to make it 12-3, North Central.

Ledezma came on to pitch the Vikings out of a bases-loaded jam in the fifth, but Augustana went down in order against Cardinal hurler Brianna Nelson in the fifth, ending the game by the mercy rule.

Nelson went the full five to get the win. Yaros took the loss and fell to 8-5 on the season.

Augustana hosts Knox in a 4:00 p.m. doubleheader on Tuesday, May 3.
