2010-11 Season - 2011 WOMEN'S SWIMMING & DIVING REVIEW

Freshman Helen Myers won both diving events at the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin championship for the Vikings during the 2010-11 season. Augustana finished the year fourth in the CCIW and went 2-2 in dual meets.

The Augustana women’s swimming team wrapped up its season by finishing fourth at the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Championship Meet, tallying 289.5 points at the three day event.  It is the second straight year that the Blue & Gold have taken fourth place.  Wheaton won the team title with 892.5 points followed by Carthage with 830 and Illinois Wesleyan with 779.  The Vikings finished ahead of North Central (288), Millikin (205), and Rose-Hulman (127).

The women’s team was led by a pair of diving titles from Helen Myers.  She won the one meter diving event with a score of 339 and also took home top honors in the three meter diving event with 358.85 points.  Tanya Walter also scored in both of the diving events.  She placed second in the three meter dive with 331.80 points and was fourth in the one meter dive with a score of 296.15.

Augustana had a strong showing in the 100 freestyle race, compiling a pair of top 10 finishes.  Hillary Ferguson finished in eighth place with a time of :54.91.  Molly Clennon followed close behind in 10th place, hitting the finish in a time of :55.17.

The Vikings continued to receive quality finishes in the relay events, led by a fourth place performance in the 800 freestyle relay.  Clennon, Ferguson, Mary Naughton, and Emma Regnier completed the race with a clocking of 8:24.55.  Augustana also grabbed the fifth slot in the 200 and 400 freestyle relay races as well as the 200 medley relay.  Alexandra Piper, Clennon, Naughton, and Ferguson finished the 200 freestyle competition with a time of 1:41.79.  The same foursome also finished the 400 freestyle race with a time of 3:44.03.  Hollyann Kabbe, Clennon, Regnier, Ferguson notched another fifth place finish in the 200 medley with a clocking of 1:58.21.  Colleen Mans, Emily Timmons, Regnier, and Piper rounded out the relays with a sixth place finish and a time of 4:27.15 in the 400 medley event.

The Blue & Gold earned a runner-up finish at the four-team Illinois Wesleyan Halloween Invitational to open the season.  Myers led the individual finishes with a second place showing in the diving event.  Elizabeth O’Hara placed third in the 200 breaststroke and Regnier was third in the 200 butterfly.  Regnier was also a part of a pair of relays that finished in second place.

After edging Millikin (101-99) and then falling to Monmouth (91-108) in a pair of duals, the team returned to Bloomington for the Illinois Wesleyan Invitational and placed second out of seven squads.  Myers and Walter continued to be a superb 1-2 punch in the diving events as Myers took second with Walter in third in both the one and three meter competitions.  Ferguson also produced a second place finish in the 50 freestyle and a third place performance in the 100 freestyle.

A large field of good teams showed up at the Grinnell Invitational a couple weeks later and the Vikings proved that they are a quality squad, placing third in the 11 team field.  Clennon had the top individual showing with a third place finish in the 200 freestyle race.  The 2010 portion of the schedule wrapped up with a narrow (114-125) dual meet loss to Loras.

After training in Florida over the Winter Break, the team was back in the pool to begin 2011 and came out on fire with a (140-101) dual meet win over Coe.  Augustana returned to Grinnell for another invitational full of strong competition, this time finishing seventh out of 12 teams, helping to prepare the Blue & Gold for the CCIW meet to close out the season.
