ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Augustana sophomore Alex Rindone (Marmion Academy, Geneva, Ill.) has been selected as the men’s “Track Athlete of the Week” in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin for his performance on Saturday, April 16 at the Meet of Champions. Rindone was the individual winner in the 100, 200, and a member of the winning 4x100 relay and was instrumental in Augustana claiming a huge team victory in the 10-team event.
Rindone won the 200 with a time of :21.39 setting a new school record in the event. Augustana’s previous school record was set in 1997 by Kyle Poston who ran :21.69. Rindone also won the 100 in :10.64 missing the school record by four one-hundredths of a second. That record is held by 1981 NCAA Division III national champion Kofi Osei.
Rindone has been a major contributor to the Vikings success so far this season. He was a double winner in 100 and 200 in Augustana’s a dual meet victory against St. Ambrose on Saturday, March 19. His time in the 200 of :21.74 was a new meet record and an NCAA Division III qualifying time. At the Wartburg Select meet on Saturday, April 2, Rindone placed third in the 100 with an NCAA Division III qualifying time of :10.72. He again hit the qualifying time in the 100 at the Lee Calhoun Memorial Relays on Saturday, April 9 recording another blistering :10.72.
During the recently completed indoor season Rindone was the conference champion in the 55 meter dash recording a time of :06.59. He was also a member of the conference champion 1600 relay team that recorded an NCAA qualifying time of 3:19.78.
As a freshman, Rindone won CCIW titles in both the indoor and outdoor meets. He won the 200 indoors during the winter and last spring he added outdoor crowns in the 100, 200, and 400 meter relay. To date, Rindone has won a total of six conference championships in his short career.
The son of Paul and Jill Rindone of Geneva, Illinois, Alex is a communications major at Augustana.
