2011 Season - Carthage defeats Vikings 13-0

Freshman first baseman Pat Wilson had one of five Augustana hits as the Vikings fell to Carthage by a score of 13-0.

MOLINE, Ill.-Augustana couldn't finish off a three-game sweep of Carthage Monday, as the Red Men jumped on the Vikings early and cruised to 13-0 win at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field. Augustana is now 19-6 on the year and a game back of Carthage in the CCIW standings at 8-4.

After Viking starter Ben Heaton (Bloomington Central Catholic HS, Heyworth, Ill.) pitched out of a two-on, no-out jam in the first, it looked like Augustana might be able to jump in front for the first time in the series. Kurt Schmidt (Grayslake Central HS, Grayslake, Ill.) came up with a one-out infield single in the bottom of the first, but was picked off by Carthage starter Eric Rohe, who got out of the inning with no further trouble.

The Red Men played some small ball in the second to push across the only run they would need. Kyle Pusateri led off with a single to right. He moved second on Matt Soderlund's sacrifice and to third on an infield out. Then Tyler Eickmeyer beat out a beautiful bunt down the third base to score Pusateri with the game's first run.

Soderlund's two-run double to center knocked Heaton out of the box and was the big hit in a five-run Carthage third. The Red Men added another five in the fifth off Viking reliever Rick Erickson (Lake Zurich HS, Hawthorn Woods, Ill.). Carthage right fielder Mike Petti had a two-run double in the inning.

Pusateri's two-run double off freshman reliever Luke Lowery (Regis HS, Lone Tree, Colo.) in the top of the seventh pushed the lead to 13-0 and Rohe retired the Vikings in order in the bottom of the frame to end the game by the mercy rule.

Heaton fell to 3-2 with the loss, while Rohe improved to 4-0 by limiting the Vikings to just five singles and a lone walk in going the full seven innings.

Augustana hosts a pair of non-conference games this week before getting back into CCIW play on the weekend. First up is a 7:00 p.m. contest with Benedictine on Tuesday, April 19 at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field.
